PCs are going the way of typewriters, vinyl records and vacuum tubes, one of the engineers who worked on the original machine has said.

More can be found here.

That dribble doesn't deserve reposting...

Sounds like another Steve Jobs.

with the rate of hardware advancements out pacing peples needs , this wasn't all that surprising. most people can spend $400AU on a new laptop and have it do everything they want. only difference spending more is a few seconds faster boot up and slightly better multitasking.

Not really, gamers still prefer PCs as they have more cooling options and are still relatively cheap compared to laptops. As for game consoles and mobiles, it's just not the same and there are tons of players who prefer gaming on a PC than Xbox or PS, simply because the controls on the latter two cannot possibly be compared to keyboard - mouse.

Well yes conventional desktops will not be the forefront of computer sales, but to say " Era of PC coming to close" is a bold and misleading headline.

I read something about this in some PC magazine the other day. They're projecting desktop sales to take a HUGE hit with the advent of tablets, but laptop and netbook sales will remain the same. I can kind of see that. Your average idiot at Best Buy only wants an internet machine, and if he can get a thin, highly portable one for cheap, then why bother with a desktop? PCs will probably be relegated to business environments and basements

He's right to some extent though he's viewing things from the business perspective with a narrow definition of a PC. We could easily end up with a 'business console' kinda like a games console however the games are Word and Access, Oracle has already started making their own packaged database servers.

There's no reason why a games console, media entertainment device or thin client can't use a mouse and keyboard.

Repost this when tables and other portable devices have serious computing power.

That's not what the Dean is saying in his blog, that's what the BBC author is saying in his summary. If anything the original blog is mostly a marketing piece for IBM. Indeed, most people no longer need a traditional PC; the one in their phone, tablet, or similar computing device is sufficient. If you include digital pads, tablets, and other multimedia devices under the definition of PC, though, it could be argued that the PCs are entering a new vanguard of innovative design. I would certainly not dismiss the article due to lack of computing power alone. PC sales have been in decline for years, and competing devices are increasingly gaining in percentage of sales in consumer electronics.

Well yes conventional desktops will not be the forefront of computer sales, but to say " Era of PC coming to close" is a bold and misleading headline.

Except those were the words of BBC, not Dean, whose original blog is actually titled, "IBM Leads the Way in the Post-PC Era." That doesn't get BBC much traffic, though, while the other title does. Happy gaming, Boz

It's true, mobile devices are taking over. However PCs will still have their use unless reliable, cost effective, high performance mobile solutions become avaliable.

Given the fact that desktop computers have better cooling, more powerful PSU's, more space for powerful hardware, and are very upgradable... they won't be disappearing soon.

These types of articles are not even worth reading. The desktop will always have a power advantage over laptops, tablets, and smartphones and this advantage is what will keep desktops relevant.

I believe that tablets are going to replace desktops and laptops for the average person within 5-10 years. You can see microsoft, and apple getting ready for this. This is why microsoft added arm support for windows 8, and apple is making OS X and iOS more similar (OS X is rumored to support ARM with its next release also).

I see people using mobile devices most of the time but still having a PC-equivalent station in their home.
