While there are of course some basic rules in place as far as how the game works, there don't seem to be any particular objectives that the game gives you for the most part once you get past the intro stuff. Basically you "make your own fun." Most people seem to say that to really enjoy the game you have to be in a corporation (the game's guilds, basically) so you can get involved with whatever it is they are doing. It's a little bit too open-ended for my tastes.

The only real fun I had with the game was joing with corps. and making freinds. You can't get anywhere by your self in this game.

The game is good but insanely hard and to grasp everything is a long process.

You can lose interest really quickly if its not your sort of thing, massive learning curve also adds to that.

I've been playing it for 3 or 4 weeks now, and I'm really enjoying it. It is very complicated, it takes a very long time to learn, but it can be very fun. It certainly isn't a game for those who need immediate rewards to stay hooked. And as the others said, even though you can go entirely solo more than you can in other MMOs, you really have to join a corperation to if you want to enjoy yourself. Getting advice from corp mates really is the only way to learn the game, and it's really rewarding working to improve your corp's standing.

One thing that I think is worth mentioning: I was really amazed at how friendly and mature the playerbase is in EVE. This is a good thing for a game where players provide most of the content. I'd give the game a shot.

There is a 21day trial on steam. Go try it now.

Oh, and play the tutorial a few times, it's a really complicated game. Should be worth it too.

Eve online probably has the most depth for any MMO, but that's also a bad thing. Incredibly hard to get started. Nearly impossible to master.

The one thing I didn't like was that no matter how long you played, you're restricted by the 'skill' system. I like the system, but you should also be able to work to achieve skills. This system forces you to wait, sometimes up to 6months, to get skills. In the end, I was basicly paying them to level, which is stupid.

Everything is player based, which is awesome because anything can happen. It has a lot of real world stuff, but yes it has a big learning curve. Is it worth it? Yes.

rules: bank heists in an MMO rarely happen, except in EVE where it seems to be the norm

Meh it's gone downhill over the years. It went from a game of exploration, explotation, adventure, and thrills to a game where small corps and alliances full of skilled players ruled the vastness of space to a game where numbers matter most and the few that have the numbers exploit their members in an attempt to take null sec space. These days POS and blob warfare are the mainstay of the game, small gang and solo roaming are all but forgotten lost arts, the economy has been screwed up dozen of times and currently there is a massive amount of inflation and for the most part is controlled by only a few men who dictate the in game prices. It still has it's flashes of greatness every once in a while but for the most part the game has just gotten to big for itself and far larger than the developers ever intended it to be. I gave up on the game and short of them creating a fresh server I don't see myself going back.
