It's because when you make a game on the console a certain amount of the profit goes to Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft. Since the PC is a open platform that is not the case.

I thought most people knew the reason, as others have said it is down to the console royalty fee that publishers have to pay to release their games on consoles. This is primarily the reason why Sony and Microsoft can sell their console at a loss they hope to make up that loss through the royalty fee later on. It is one of the reasons why I am strenuously against any attempt to bring PC games prices into line with console game prices

Yeah, although Wii games are still $50 dollars, I assume because more limited and not attractive to hardcore gamers. If PC games ever go to $60 (*cough*MW2*cough*) I will have to get a social life.

Hm, With my recent foray into PC gaming I just noticed the price difference. Sure I have to buy a 1k+ computer to play it how I want, but I will save 10 bucks on every game :)

Limited? The Wii alone matches the PS3, 360, and PC markets combined.

Console makers don't make any money on the consoles or very little. They want to license games so they get a cut of the profits.

Plus, with every 10 games or so you buy, you save enough money to upgrade a component.

Not only the license fee thing, but consoles are just plain more popular. So retailers can charge £10 more for the games, knowing that people will still buy them.

ps3 and xbox 360 consoles are popular only with certain crowds/demographics. Everyone has a pc and most play some sort of games on pc.

Not even close.

In 2009...

Wii: $9.6m

PS3: $4.3m

Xbox 360: $4.7m

#2-7 of the top 10 selling games belonged to the Wii.

NPD numbers are about as accurate as you'll get, so yes the Wii pretty much doubles up the PS3, 360, and PC combined.

LQTM umm with pc added, it would be different, but you just add "and pc combined" in there yourself.

Those are the numbers of consoles sold, obviously PC's are included on that list because PC's are used for a wide variety of purposes. Reality is the PC isn't that big a player in this debate, out of around $9.5b in software sales for the gaming industry the PC brought in around $1b. The Wii has the largest marketshare in both the software and hardware markets, excluding handhelds. There is no argument here.

Yeah, that's because people can't help being fanboys everywhere they go. Most fanboys spend the least amount of time on their own forum. Apparently, they have to spend most of their time trolling on other boards, or else the sun won't shine for them tomorrow.

Again not factoring in all of PC gaming, none of the DD were counted were they, if so again would be a different thing.

Secondly your link did not mention the words PC gaming at all.

PC gaming sold $540m worth of software according to the NDP, they don't include DD. Most analysts say DD does 15%-25% of what retail does, so you get a figure around $1b total. And again, the reason you didn't see anything related to the PC in that link is because it was hardware sales, you can't break down PC hardware sales because of the varying purposes they serve.

Here is the link that shows PC game sales in 2009, again add 15%-25% to that to get the results with digital distribution sales.

I feel it necessary to point out two things here. Firstly these are NPD figures which deal with the American market only and it is widely known that America doesn't exactly have much of a love affair with the PC. In fact it would be like looking at xbox 360 sales in Japan and coming to the conclusion that the xbox 360 doesn't contribute much in terms of hardware or software sales world wide just by looking at how it performs in Japan. The PC's heartland is mainly Europe and Asia in many European countries the PC is King even Microsoft acknowledge that.

Secondly the TC only asked a question regarding why PC game prices are lower than console game prices. This has been answered the reason is down to the console royalty fee that Microsoft and Sony charge. So I am not sure why people are trying to downplay the PC's financial contribution to the software world in this topic.

NPD only factors in north american sales. The pc is a bigger market in Europe and Asia.

Not sure where you get your 15-25% DD stat from but this would disagree.

The information he is comming up with is, to say the least, inaccurate.

I will never, ever pay over £30 ($45 USD or 40 EUR) for a computer game! No matter how good it is! I know there is always somewhere online to get it half the price that's in stores.

I think, pc games have harder time pushing sales after the initial release and also the fact that you can buy it direct download competing against retail. Also royalties to each of its console and omg wii games are a rip comparing the production cost I mean o.o
