I'm looking at everyones sig, I see mostly Phenom II 955's.
Everyone says Intel is on top, but it seems for most people they have gone with AMD for Price/performance.

IMO AMD Phenom II line is the best bang for your buck. Sure a ferrari would be nice but I can still keep up with it in my Nissan GT-R... that's the way I see it.
All my friends and I are rocking 550be's and 720be's. We couldn't be happier with the performance we're getting out of these processors for the price! They unlock easy to quads and even if they don't they're still the best bang for the buck you can buy.
Mine was supposed to be a repair job when the motherboard of my old pc died (bulging capacitors). But, it was hard to find a Socket 939 motherboard from the sites I trusted.
I spent around $750 for the parts (from newegg.com) and shipping. For that price, I'm very happy with the results. I usually spend $1.5k-$2k for a new pc. This current one will tide me over for a couple of years.
I haven't gotten around to overclocking the cpu since I'm not a big fan of it. The last cpu I overclocked was a P-166 back in pre-3d acceleration 1996 when it really mattered. But, it's no effort whatsoever getting my Phenom II 720BE to 3.2ghz. For now, I'm happy with simply unlocking the 4th core which works beautifully.
Anyway, my old (2005) pc specs:
AMD Athlon X2 4200+ 2.2ghz
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
2gb DDR
512mb XFX 8600GT (replaced an X800XL)
If the status quo doesn't change, my next pc may be back to an Intel one. I do alternate between ATI and nVidia with video cards. Since I have an HD 5770 right now, its successor will be an nVidia card. Why I alternate? I dunno. Just one of my quirks. He He.
Purely for gaming, the Phenom is generally the way to go because it performs very similar to the i7/i5 lineup for a lower price. However, if you do anything such as folding, video encoding, etc, then i7 performs significantly better and is more worth the cost.
I wouldnt use the word significantly for the i7's since they only shave seconds not minutes over Phenom 2's. Plus why just get i7 just for folding or video when you can use Nvidia CUDA which creams both CPU's :P.Purely for gaming, the Phenom is generally the way to go because it performs very similar to the i7/i5 lineup for a lower price. I have an Intel CPU since it was the best choice when I bought my Mobo/CPU, but if I were buying today.. I would get a Phenom II X4 for a gaming rig. They offer the best price/performance right now. They are clock-for-clock roughly as fast as the High-end Core 2 Duo and Quad CPUs, but cost less.. what's not to like?
I have a Q6600 and I wouldn't trade it for an AMD platform CPU.
This thing runs better than half of the AM3 processors out there

Congratulations.
It also uses a lot more energy and puts out a lot more heat, you should get a q9550. Q6600 is dated.I have a Q6600 and I wouldn't trade it for an AMD platform CPU.

Basically server processors like the Gainstown with a motherboard like this. Nothing most consumers will even consider though.i7 and above? What's above for consumers?

i9's that aren't out yet?
I just got one, phenom x2 550be. Best cpu I could find for my budget, was actually less money that I had allocated to my cpu costs so I used the extra cash to go dx11. From what I have seen of benchmarks and peoples opinions in general is that it performs very well.
Well, I upgraded from a Q9300 to a Phenom II X4 965 and my Windows experience score for processor went from 5.9 to 7.6 and in general everything I do is faster, especially gaming. I am running my PII with a CoolerMaster V8 @ 3.81ghz and that 6MB of L3 cache and DDR3 do help, lol. In reality the PII's perform in between a Core2 Quad and a i7 and very closely to a i5. But yeah, with the right mobo PII's are downright screamers. Very happy with my upgrade

Did you just honestly say the new GTR can keep up with a Ferrari...Dude both cars are in different ****s but this is a PC thread i'm not going to get into specs of Different types of cars :)

Actually, stock the GT-R can keep up with most Ferraris. I know this isn't a car thread, but I had to jump in when I saw someone question that. A new GTR does 0-60 in less than 3.5 seconds, the 1/4 mile in 11.8-11.9, and tops out over 190mph. There aren't that many Ferraris that are beating that. Plus the GTR has absolute top-notch handling and lapped the Nurburgring faster than any Ferrari except for the Enzo.
In an effort to avoid repeating too much of what has already been said I'll keep it short :P
They are excellent CPUs for the price you pay, I'm currently running a 955 at 3.4 GHz and it's fantastic. I'm not interested in folding or video encoding so I guess an i7 would be a waste of money. For my gaming & programming needs the Phenom II is all I'll need for the forseeable.

It can keep up to with it to a point. Because of AWD it launches well, but after 60 it starts to fall behind. Still, better than most car Analogies I've heard. But I'd rather have a Corvette ZR1 or Viper ACR (Both of which are cheaper than the Ferarri) :) Huh... what? Computers? Oh... right.

If a car can keep up through the 1/4 mile, at which point it's doing 120mph, that's fast enough to me. Plus the fact that it can beat the Ferraris around the 'Ring proves that it's faster once curves are thrown-in. Anyways.... I'd take any of these cars we're talking about! :D The problem with the GTR is that you can't get a proper manual gearbox with it in the US! I'll just have to stick with my Z!
My qx6700 from 2006 is still competitive :P JigglyWiggly_
Those are incredible OC'ers. I know someone who went to 4.5 ghz on air cooling trying to max out crysis two years ago. I don't know if it stayed stable when he played games for long periods though, I remember he mentioned he bumped it down to 4.3 just to be safe. Probably heated up way too much.
I just like Intel, very reliable and robust in my opinion. never tried AMD tho, we dont have them here.GazaAliamd has been far more reliable in my experience, sleep mode never seems to work for me on intel but always works with amd. plus more core 2 system never ran as fast on the desktop as my athlon x2 system did. maybe asus and intel don't mix well but the intel one caused my far more problems.
it's still hardly worth the extra when you will still be waiting over night for a render job. i7 is better if you have the money but besides slightly faster rendering you wont notice any difference.Purely for gaming, the Phenom is generally the way to go because it performs very similar to the i7/i5 lineup for a lower price. It also uses a lot more energy and puts out a lot more heat, you should get a q9550. Q6600 is dated. The Q6600 may be dated and relatively inefficient due to the old 65nm process, but why should anyone spend another US$250 or so on a new CPU for a negligible performance difference? Let's face it, anyone with a Q6600 that can be overclocked decently shouldn't need to upgrade until maybe Sandy Bridge. Most games tend to hammer the GPU far more, so the money might as well go toward something like an HD Radeon 5850. That said, if I bought my desktop NOW rather than two years and two months ago (where it was largely 65nm Core 2 Duo/Quad vs. the failtacular original Phenom), I'd probably go Phenom II myself due to price-to-performance reasons and lack of socket hell with Intel. (LGA1156 AND LGA1366 for the consumer segment? What are they thinking?)[QUOTE="simardbrad"]
