I am in the process of buying a new rig and i have some questions about the GPU i'm going to get.

I'm going for EVGA card and am trying to decide between the 7950GT or 8600GTS and possibly the 8800 GTS(Not sure if i can fit the extra $$ into my budget).  any thoughts on these GPUs and which one i should get would be great.

Also I was wondering just much better DirectX10 is vs DirectX9. Worth the extra cash?

Thanks

The 7950GT is better.

If you get the eVGA 7950GT, you can use the step up program to trade it in for an 8800GTS within 3 months of purchase.

DX10 vs DX9? Well it depends what card... and even if you don't have Vista, the 8800s wreck in DX9 games.

If you don't care about DX10 get the sapphire x1950xt 256mb for 170 on newegg. Blows the 7950gt out of the water.

Make sure you get after market cooling too, I can't stand that horrible Heat-sink and Fan, so freaking loud and ineffective.

I'm less familiar with the GTS, but I upgraded from the 7950 to the 8800GTX and it was a noticable improvement. Not huge, but with the 8800 you get the added benefit of -not- running SLI to achieve the same speed. Running the 7950 at full speed means that you can't run dual monitor.
