stalker: shadows of chyrnoble and call of pripyat

warhammer 40k: dawn of war 2 + chaos rising (retribution is nice but not worth the investment outside of mp)

Okami on ps2 was pretty good and VERY fun

With so many platforms to choose from, those are the three you pick? Hahaha. PC forums pal, legacy platform forums are that way ( --->) .

While other people may disagree, I have found the Mass Effect games to have really great story telling. It doesn't have the most original story line, but Bioware does a great job at telling it.

PS1

MGS1

PS2

MGS2

MGS3

God of War

God of War II

Final Fantasy X

Devil May Cry 3 (or so I hear/see)

Resident Evil 4

Tales of Symphonia

Tales of the Abyss (I assume)

PC

Portal

Portal 2

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Braid

Darksiders (not mindblowing, but worth playing)

Assassins Creed II (again, not mindblowing but worthplaying)

Mirrors Edge (Far from perfect, but very unique and interesting)

Mass Effect

Mass Effect 2

After reading your whole post :P, I would say of my list, MGS is number one. But Braid, Mass Effect, and maybe others like RE4, AC2, and so on would be a good fit.

Planescape Torment is the equivalent of Xenogears, on the PC, in terms of complexity, depth and how memorable everything is. I consider these two games to be the definite height of role playing games, that no game has ever surpassed.

I also love Xenogears, i high recommend Planescape Torment.

Half Life 1,2, episode 1, episode2.I found half life 1 very engaging, because there is just something about taking on a bunch of aliens, marines, and black ops all by yourself while trying to move through the black mesa facility to stop the problem. From part 2 and beyond the story is more detailed but nothing beats the original half life.

Ah yes. The End was fantastic, and every boss felt unique. (The Boss was a bit frustrating at first, though)

I haven't played any of the games you mentioned, so I'll throw out a couple of my favorite singleplayer games with engaging story lines:

PSX:

-Star Ocean

-Legend of Legaia

PC:

-Beyond Good & Evil

-Psychonaughts
