Hey guys, I had asked this questin in an indie games thread on SW. I am wondering what games, retail or indie, are on PC that have this style? I absolutely love the open world exploration feel of the games like the ones I posted in the title. I just bought Darksiders and have played a tid bit, and I DL'd the demo of Aquaria as reccomended in the other thread about indie games. I would LOVE to see a darker themed game (not to say there is no sun lit forests or anything lol) with a gothic feel...something like where you play as the Dark Wanderer from Diablo :P. Haha he is awesome.

My favorite XBOX Indie title is probably Astroman. It's definitely in the Metroidvania category, although the focus is more on platforming than combat. It's only 3 bucks and it's a blast to play.

Make sure you also check out Cave Story. You can get it free but the best version is the $12 port for Wiiware. It looks pretty sweet in HD, although its graphics are probably meant to mimic the Sega Genesis era.

'Hero's Arms' on Kongregate.com is a sweet homage to Zelda that features some pretty killer boss fights, very impressive stuff for a home made game.

Don't know wwy, but Beyond Good & Evil reminded me Zelda a lot. It's also a great game that was ahead of it's time.

Just got into mood to replay it again...lol *searching for the discs*

Can't think of many. Darksiders just ended up felling like a "bro" gamers Zelda.

1. How did you lump Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania into the same category...?

2. Why is this on the PC Games forum since we seem to be discussing Wiiware and other console-ish games?

3. Try Castlevania Symphony of the Night if you haven't yet, it's like 10 bucks on XBLA, and is, hands-down the best Side-scrolling RPG ever made.

You should try Aquaria. It's a great indie Metroidvania game on PC. If you like games like Symphony of the Night, you'll absolutely love Aquaria.

i think cave story is a bit like those games TC. outcast could also be worth a look. its very old but its up on GOG.com and was way ahead of its time in 1999. it wouldnt be as polished as zelda or metroid but its still well worth a play imho. as far as i know GOG have it running fine on win7. the PC tends to be stronger in open world RPGs like gothic and elder scrolls though. not the same thing as metroid mind but those games are also worth a look. im playing morrowind again with a graphical overhaul...good fun :D. but games like zelda and metroid are pretty much a ninty thing (with a few 3rd party efforts like okami of course).

Exploration based games with a big world and items needed to progress. They all have that feel :P. I was giving examples of non PC games but I was mainly looking for PC games (seeing as to how we are on the PC forums), but many people gave me non PC games :P.

American McGee's Alice is a good one all be it rather twisted (and somewhat expensive). Its sequel is coming out in mid June.

Well, I was merely pointing out that

A. There is no "exploration" genre.

B. While they loosely share that aspect, those games would never be categorized together.

SOTN is waaaayyyy better than the DS ones. It has the biggest, best Inventory system, and by far the biggest explorable area of the series, along with awesome mechanices, plenty of hidden items, etc etc etc.

I would call AM Alice pretty straightforward by comparison imo, though I'll definitley hit up the sequel.

If you're just generally interested in games where you get to explore a bunch of things, then Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion will definitely keep you busy for a long, long, long time.

Then i would suggest the witcher, it starts slow but had that feel in spades. Also the stalker series is incredible.

Whats you problem? I can tell exactly what he means, he is looking for those types of games. This is why pc gamers on this forum have a bad name, no need for the attitude. The only one I can think of for the pc is darksiders, but you have it. I have consoles to go along with my pc for this very reason

Play Oblivion as a death knight. There is an awesome mod that recreates Arthas Minithils armor in stunning detail. Skyrim will be amazing.

I'd never heard of that game until you posted this. I downloaded it. What a little gem of a game. I love it. It reminds me of the good old NES days.

Lords of Magic was great... (when I was 12) Any way to get a copy of this game these days that runs on Win 7?
