OK, i know this is a stupid question, but i have never done this b4... im gonna get an external hard drive, like 500gb, to back up all my music, movies, pictures, and game files. how do i copy game files into my external, and will that enable me to copy them back onto a new comp hard drive later on after i install the games again? how does the backup of game files work, where are they on my comp?? (just bear with me..) thanks!

Backing up game files does not tend to work. Usually the drive you install it in is the one it is going to have to stay in...from personal experience, whenever I move game files SOMETHING always gets mixed up and the game ends up not running. Your better off just reinstalling.

hmm, but i know there should be a way. i dont want to MOVE, just COPY. so that if my current hard drive crashes or whatever, i can reinstall the games ona new one, then paste the old files in so my progress, upgrades, rank etc. arent lost. how do u do that?

Copy and paste. The location of whatever files you want to back up are not the same for every game.

I copy pasted all my games (ra3, crysis, witcher, jade empire etc.) from my main C drive to my 750gb external and absolutely no problems so far. I haven't reinstalled windows plus i'm running windows xp.

Theres nothing special to using an external drive - just plug it into your system and Windows should install it as a second hard drive on your system. The rest is just standard copying and pasting.

For games, you only really want to go for savegame files, backing up the whole game does little good. Games save file locations vary. Some store them in the same directory the game was installed in (Steam-based games / older titles). Most newer games create folders in your My Documents space for saves and config files. You're gonna have to spot-check each for the savegame files you wish to backup.

  1. Ok, first off. It doesn't cause problems to backup save games on a pc.
  2. You can simply insert the saved game file, in the, saved game folder. might be called saves
  3. if you want, copy the files to the backup hdd, from inside this folder.
  4. when you want to, copy the files back into this folder, from the backup hdd

This way, you can uninstall the game, give your friend a saved game to test stuff. All you need to do is reinsert the save gamedata back into the save folder.

Whoever said it's not possible doesn't know what their talkin about. It's one reason PC gaming is nicer.

Where can I find my saved games folder. Like many others, I've chose to install my games onto an external hard drive, and a couple days ago, my comp screwed up, so I had to redo everything, and lost all my documents and applications. Now, I thought everything was still fine with the stuff in my hard drive, but when I try to play the games again, I found out all my saved game progress files were gone. So in order to prevent this from happening again, can somebody tell me where my games are saving? And how I can make them to save in the hard drive instead of my pc?

Ghost it instead, then yuo don't have to worry about how installations alter the windows registry ect. Personally i'ld run an external NAS for data such as pictures and music. Then run a second internal drive to ghost from, you can also run this second drive if you get a virus and need to do something quickly rather than spending time ghosting to the other drive.

Save game files are in various locations. Copy everything under "appdata" and "my games" (in my documents and shared documents) also some have their own folders under my documents, that won't iinclude everything but that should be most of them.

Thanks, I've found the save game files and moved the files into my hard drive. But if I save again in the future, will the saved files still save in the documents folder or in the folder I've created in my hard drive instead. Should I move the whole folder of the game or can I just move the saved game files?

Just copy the save game files, don't move them else your games won't find them, you'll have to copy them back if you want to use them

You may be able to do it by moving the location of the file so that the original folder turns into a shortcut and acts as a portal, i've done that with "my music" before but i'm not sure if it'll work for other programs
