I dunno... I played it while my internet was down, and because I didn't have much else installed Fallout 3 was pretty much the only game I played for about 2 weeks.
But I really don't know why people say it's so great... the graphics are nice, the gameplay is cool, the story was good and immersive, the setting was good (although I absolutely hated everything being destroyed after seeing the beauty Bethesda can make in Oblivion, though they did do it well) but I wouldn't say it was a great game. Quite good, definitely, but not brilliant.
I found that once you do the main story-line, thats pretty much it. Once you've done the main game, you don't feel like going back and doing anything else. I felt that on Oblivion once you did the main story, there was still much more to do. Though, I had a great experience with Oblivion; never finished the main story as I got bored. Then one day after it'd been out for a year and a bit, I installed Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and about 50 other mods. It worked brilliantly, and I've never had so much fun on a RPG.
But Fallout 3 seemed a little... less RPG and more FPS, which is good, but it simply doesn't last as long as Oblivion did. I guess once I get my new PC I'll re-install it and be able to play with everything maxed out, although I almost did on this old rig.

lol? little RPG and more FPS? Fallout 3 is one of RARE TRUE RPG's out there. Your actions have consequences, you can decide what to do and everything will impact how game unveils etc.amazing game, its always nice when a game... works

i Disagree completely, fallout 3 was a shallow game with a small amount of features and dumbed down gameplay, especially when compared to the older games, which have better storylines, better atmosphere, and better gameplayi Disagree completely, fallout 3 was a shallow game with a small amount of features and dumbed down gameplay, especially when compared to the older games, which have better storylines, better atmosphere, and better gameplayArtosa

F2 didn't have a better story, cause it was quite the same for most part as F3 (find the GECK is find the Father and the enclave master plan is the enclave master plan).
F3 had actually the best athmosphere as you could really really see the bleakness, devastation and all.
Gameplay as in turn base is gaming master race ?!
Vanilla F3 is too easy but with mods I found F3 to have the best gameplay.
F3 like f2 suffered from bad writting.

Yes, not to mention that can you can see tons of unlooted boxes and even first-aid supplies. Or remember when you're sent to explore a mall filled with goodies that's like 5 minutes away from a town? Or how even soda machines work, not to mention pre-war computers and electricity. Oh and the cars that survived nuclear holocaust only to explode in a mushroom cloud when they're a bit damaged. And the simple fact that everything looks completely devastated 200 freakin' years after the war.
Bethesda really nailed the immersion here.
My personal GOTY. Loved it, can't wait for the DLC (Jan 26th!)
The atmosphere was great. I loved the devastation. I'm a huge fan of post-apocolyptic/dystopiate movies so I was in heaven walking around and exploring. I'm a little tired of the pretty, fantasy worlds. This was so much fun for me that now I don't have too much to look forward to. Everything on the horizon looks meh to me. I guess maybe Dragon Age might be good.
I have to admit that there was something missing from the old Fallout. The dark, twisted sense of humor maybe? Also the main quest ending wasn't so great, but still a great world to explore. Oh, what happened to Harold's voice!!??!!??

THIS fallout 1+2 had a much better sense of desperation, especially in places like new reno and the hub, and the gameplay is better because you actually have to use your head unlike in fallout 3, which is dumbed down for console players. Fallout 1 and 2 also had better more grim music. The last good game bethesda made was morrowind, and there old terminator games from the 90's were decent aswellThere are some superb things about it - the open world for one - but the game itself could have been A LOT better.
As an RPG its not a scratch on a game like Deus Ex 1.
