It looks good on paper but we know how that can turn out. I'm still skeptical about Bethesda making this game. I should have my issue in a few days. My last issue of GI. Need to re-sub. :|EndersAres
Yea same here, but at least they're not turning it into oblivion with mutants (tm). This is definitely quite a few steps in the right direction.

Indeed it is. Glad they didn't use that level scaling garbage. Imagine walking into a den of raiders or cultist and they're all in power armor.
"Battle system is called the Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.). The article states. "While you'll certainly be able to tackle enemies in real time using first person shooting, V.A.T.S. lets players pause time and select a target at their leisure". Battle system still uses action points, but once you've used them up you'll still be able to fight targets in real time while they charge back up."
Herrick does not understand this part. If you can still fight in real time, then what is the purpose of the action point system? Anyways, I have a subscription for Game Informer. It'll be cool to read about the real deal in a few days.

WOW! Who would have guessed?
Well this makes me a little less skeptical about beth making fallout 3 a quality title, but that's just a LITTLE. The gameplay details still aren't clear enough at all, and we still don't know what the primary POV is,(both third and first person are mentioned in there) but I'm guessing they're actually going to work to make both POV's play very well individually.
I'm still not going to get excited about this game until I see some solid gameplay. I remember when beth's hype for oblivion was in full force and they pretty much fooled all of us thinking he gameplay would really be something special.
*bump*
C'mon there's got to be more people interested in this.
inoperativeRS
There simply isn't enough detail about the gameplay, but it's looking a lot better than I thought it would. We still need some concrete gameplay info and ultimately gameplay footage, before anyone can say that fallout 3 is in the right hands. As of now I'm still skeptical about it, but not as much as before which is definitely a good thing.

My guess is that the AP are used for more advanced actions (such as aimed shots, change of weapons, item usage, etc.) while you can still shoot/bash wildly to defend yourself while out of AP.
However this is only a guess on an article that is impossible to know the credibility of. I myself don't believe GI was given that privilege when Bethesda is so keen on keeping everything Fallout 3 as secret as possible. A playable demo? Nah, I don't think so...

That would be interesting, except for the Aimed Shots part. Twould be weird not to have the ability to aim at specific body parts in First Person view.

Very true. I shall await my copy of Game Informer to read about the real deal.
So...they've confirmed that the game will mostly play out just like a First Person Shooter, with the option to occassionally pause the game and pick out your targets, depending on how many AP you have?
If I'm reading it correctly...the 'turn based' section wil be just like a very slow version of bullet-time. Think FEAR, only with your 'reflex' time determined by your stats.
So...isn't this what we've been arguing against the whole time?
Edit: Let me try and consolidate :p
--------------------
So many complaints :p Especially in that one other forum. It sounds cool, and is a nice concept, whether it's real or not. But as fun as that may be, a great RPG it will only be if they do good with dialogue and immersion and story and all that..
I'm pretty sure it'll be overhyped by Bethesda, but will still end up being a pretty good game. Much like the Radiant AI system in Oblivion, this all sounds too good to be true, and it will be overhyped, at least some of it, and people will expect more and complain about it despite how good it actually is.
Either way, though.. I can say one thing I'm really loving.. The fact that this big-name company with it's butt seated in a nice throne of money from selling so many games.. Big PC game company, but they are still trying to be unique, listen to fans to at least some extent, willing to try new things, take on big projects.. More companies need to do this, despite how much compaining will be done against them if they can't do it perfectly for every single individual PC game player that exists on this planet.
[QUOTE="Swedish_Wolf"]I hope its not turn based combat, thats why I quit playing Fallout 1 like 30 minutes into the game. onemic
then why care about fallout 3?
Because according to professional ratings and tons and tons of people more than most recent games, Bethesda can make a damn enjoyable game. And Fallout 3 might also be a game. And it might be fun, for many people.

AP is an action points system, I believe. Much like Arcanum's turn-based mode.. And like old Might and Magic games.. It MAY play something like this.. When you click the turnbased button, it will determine the turn order and such, and you will stop in time.. When it's your turn, you will be allotted let's say 10 action points (probably a number determined by your speed).. Each step you take may cost 1 of those action points, and special moves will cost more or less action points.. But for the most part, as long as you have one action point left, you can perform any attack.. However, if you just so happen to be a speed-based character, your moves will cost maybe 3 AP (rather than maybe 12 for a large shotgun or rifle), and you can take multiple, but much weaker, shots in that time, and perform other things..
I doubt it'll work exactly like that, but that's Arcanum's system, to an extent. It's alright, but I couldn't immagine them putting any even remote form of that system into a FPS like that.. (maybe M&M style, which is slightly different) .. But even moreso, balancing the whole switching between RT and TB, and allowing RT to let your APs refill.. I have a feeling, like I said above.. This'll be something that will be overhyped, they will try so hard and make it work, like Radiant AI, and they'll have to tone it down to a more dumbed down version.
But maybe Bethesda learned from that mistake they made with Oblivion, and will actually pull a reasonable version of this idea off, and it'll work.. But I guarantee there will be people who don't think it's good enough, or as good as they thought it would be :p I'm sure I'll enjoy it, though! At least the unique experience.

Yes, but they won't work like that in Fallout 3.
Here's the 'official' information about it:
Turn-based combat is possible using Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.), although once your action points are used up, you will revert to real-time combat until they charge up again.

Well, TBH this is much better than what I expected. It's not perfect, but at least they're not abandoning concepts like aimed shots and AP's totally. I'm also pleased they decided to use SPECIAL instead of some crappy wierd lvling system like in Oblivion.
And, most importantly, I'll be able to blow heads off people! Fallout death animations FTW :P!
sounds just like oblivion but with fallout skins :)
I'd say that the turn based thing is in there pretty much to shut up the tradional fallout players that demand turn based stuff

No, your opinion fails to win the right-ness prize.. They feel like they are putting a lot of work into making new and unique concepts, like Radiant AI.. Now.. If only they can get this one to actually work..
Example of the enhanced Radiant AI dialog in F3:
A - Hello Georgious Vaultius!
B - Hi there!
A - Any news from the west coast Vaults?
B - I saw a Radscorpion the other day
A - Nasty creatures.
B - I'm thirsty. I'm gonna drink some toilet water. Bye!
A- Bye!
RazorGR
I would sig that if it wasn't too long.
So, the Bethesda hype-machine kicks in.....
Nuclear car engines FTW! :roll:RazorGR
If the gameworld is smaller than Oblivion, and cars are faster than horses...then wouldn't exploration be even faster and easier than it was in Oblivion? :|
Oh, and I am the only one who will boycott the first $2 add-on: Armoured Cars? ;)

I don't think anyone can say that beth is really doing this whole thing right until we see some gameplay. Some of the stuff the said did make me a little less skeptical, but other things(namely an FPS view) already has me worried. All in all, I'm still not trusting them until we get some solid and clear gameplay details, and more importantly some actual gameplay because I'm not falling for beths hype machine again.(radiant AI FTL)

I think it's similar to the combat system in KOTOR.
Kotor is turn-based, through and through. the fighting makes it look like real time but it's anything but.
these details don't change what i think about F3 abit....
So rather than actual turn-based combat they changed turns into a mana system where you can pause the game then use your mana- er, AP, to do special abilities. Otherwise it's all real-time FPS-style combat. Can't imagine fans will be happy with that.
Character creation sounds like it follows the same method as Oblivion's system.
Word-for-word Oblivion ad. Reality of the game was much different.More than one way to play the game. Go balls out and kill people, or sneak past situations, or perhaps talk your way out of situations.
Oblivion talked about being able to hire henchmen as well, and how integral NPC's were to the game.It doesn't say anything specifically about party members, but there's a section that talks about how integral NPC's are to the game, and that a lot of the progress in the game will be made via quests.
EDIT. A little caption under a screen shot says you'll be able to hire henchmen to help you out but this is definitely not a party based game. Also Bethesda confirms that there'll be a dog in the game.
That gives credibility to the theory of a type of bullet-time integration.Game is still violent and gory. One of the featured screens is of a guy's head exploding in super gory detail. Apparently all gory deaths in the game will be in slow motion.
Overall it sounds very much like Oblivion. Some parts near identical to what I can remember reading on it prior to the game's release.
THe combat sounds different...I wonder if the real time section will be your standard attacks while action points power your special abilites, perhaps something like aimed shot, reload, check inventory, etc.mrbojangles25Real time section is real time FPS gameplay like Oblivion's combat except with guns (and some melee weapons like sledgehammers and chainsaws). The AP section pauses the game and zooms you into the enemy where you're able to target specific body locations (it displays a % on how likely it will be you hit it). Targetting those specific locations will have effects based on where you hit. Legs could slow them down, arm could make them swing at you with less force, head could inflict damage+confuse them, etc.
So you run around doing FPS gunning until your mana-, er...AP refreshes, then zoom in to spend it making your normal gunning easier. I'm sure there's also spell- uh, abilities you can spend your AP on but we'll have to wait for those details. Any combat action you do will will slow your AP recharge so you wont be spraying bullets all over.
Still, like I mentioned before...I don't see how fans are going to like this.

Suddenly I'm not that optimistic anymore. I'm still not ready to give up on this game just yet, though. It's all individual interpretation until we see the first real gameplay movies.
