Plot summary --

The following takes place approximately 30 years after the happenings in Fallout 2.

The year is 2050, and after a nuclear war with China you and your ancestors sought shelter in Vault 101, a high tec bomb shelter built by the Vault-Tec Corporation. You stayed there for 200 years with the blast door kept shut, you (your character) were born here and will have to play through some of your childhood flashbacks (10th birthday and your 16th year).

After you choose the look and talents of your character you will then choose the look of your father who is one of the scientists in Vault 101. One day he goes missing and your character is determined to find him, this is when you first step out into the wasteland that is Washington DC... What you do now is entirely up to you, but of course you still have to find your father.

Find more on the plot of the game in the Fallout 3 First Look section above.

The game is not banned in Australia - RC refused classification, you can always import it.

I'm looking forward to this. However, I will still be upgrading Q1 2009 and then I have to catch up on countless games since before the Half-Life 2 mark...

Yeah and with the price of games in Australia being so expensive importing would have been a better idea anyway.

I just finished reading the latest PC Gamer magazine which has an article about Fallout 3. The writer was allowed to play a few missions and had very positive things to say. We can blow off limbs, be pschyotic, and the general feel of the originals were there according to PC Gamer. I am now very excited for fallout 3. I had had my doubts but they are gone now until I play a demo or buy the game.

As expected, Gamespot was bubbly in their preview as they are with all their previews. They are never as honest or candid in their previews as they are in their reviews. What's the deal with that?

They are lazy. They take months to review games these days. It's honestly pathetic.

I've never actually read a bad preview in my life, anywhere... ever*. Sites rely on content, and dumping all over a game before it's even released isn't exactly going to make the publishers want to invite the site back for another look at the game - bad reviews can kill a game... bad previews can kill a game before it's even on store shelves.

A positive spin on all previews is best for everyone (except the reader). Sites get the content they want to keep readers reading and publishers get the hype they want.

That being said, it's unreasonable to judge a game too much before it's finished, so I don't necessarily have a problem with spin in a preview, provided the review is honest.

Still, I'm sure GameSpot will be giving Fallout 3 at least a nine based on their reviews over the last few years, so it's not like a positive preview is really misplaced (as far as GS is concerned) for Fallout 3.

*I noticed a thread (about Fallout 3, as it happens) mentioning a very negative preview from some site (Eurogamer I think?). I didn't read it, but if it is indeed a negative preview, it's the one exception I've ever heard of to the positive preview rule.

Thanks for making this, I am really looking forward to Fallout 3 even though its catching some flak here on GS (and presumably other sites)

I liked oblivion and even if its more oblivion than fallout, ill get it and love it. :)

Meh, I'm expecting it to be a sub par RPG and a sub par action game, just like Oblivion.

Very true, generally previews are usually almost very positive. I kinda see it as an unspoken agreement between game sites and publishers. Sites report on the intent on the game and refrain from judging it before the actual review and the publishers let the sites get an early peek at the games. I think the most striking example of the positive preview I've seen was 'Lair' for the PS3. Less than a month before release sites were posting glowing review talking about how awesome and fun it was. At release it got a 4.5 review score and was described as a disaster:

a "good" or "bad" preview is for you to judge,

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/08/04/fallout-3-hands-on-preview/1

point of interest:

"Fallout 3 carries much of the accessibility of the past Elder Scrolls games; that perpetual, gaping openness that puts the world at your finger tips at all times.

Previous Fallout games have always funneled the player into a particular character type based on past actions and responses. Act like a fabulously magnanimous arse for your first few quests in Vault City and certain quests will start dropping out of reach for you ¡V you can¡¦t become Captain of the Guard if you¡¦ve got false citizenship papers and a liberal, peaceful attitude to nearby towns.

Fallout 3 however has a slightly different ethic and has spun this round somewhat because there¡¦s a hidden flaw wrapped in the model of the previous games ¡V that the player doesn¡¦t always know how their options are being trimmed, their choices culled. You might miss out on important quests and information without knowing it, so as well as extending development time by factoring in all this redundant content, you can leave players feeling falsely trapped or locked into a game they don¡¦t want to play.

Fallout 3 avoids this neatly then, giving players a constant string of second chances. You¡¦re reputation is still tracked locally and globally via the karma evil-o-meter that labels you with different titles and insults based on your allegiances and actions, but you have a permanent ability to disobey your own ethic.

You can, for example, take on a specifically evil quest to slaughter the entire population of kittens a town, but doing so won¡¦t prevent you from taking a good quest later or having a chance to expand the kitten orphanage to nicer premises if you want to turn your life around."

And what I loved about Fallout was how the game really punished the player. *sigh*
