Here's a few basic ones:

-Get up your small arms skill. They're the most common type of weapon found throughout the game and they're not all that small (like assault rifles).

-Invest in the medicine skill because chances are you will be fighting lots as you progress throughout the game. The higher the medicine the less stimpaks you'll have to consume.

-Shoot all humanoid enemies in the head and don't be afraid to get close.

-Up your repair skill. This is incredibly useful once you get into downtown DC.

-Shoot Centaurs in the legs.

-Explore and search eevrything around you. Supplies are scarce and you need whatever you can get.

-Don't forget to sell your useless items. This really helps early on when you need to buy ammo.

I could keep going on but these are just a few tips i've found work.

I put stuff in the cabinets in my house. I like to keep a little bit of ammo in there and a little emergency fund of caps if i need it.

Yep V.A.T.S. plus a Combat Shotgun at close range or Frag Grenades into a group = one heck of a combination :D

repair skill and use it to pick up weapons/armor and repair all your items, makes the damage much better.

Also don't do the main quest because in general I thought they sucked. Just explore and do side quests (Anything not related to your father) until you want to finish it.

when hacking a computer for a safe, crack the safe for the exp then hack the computer for more exp. you get double the exp for just hacking the computer and opening/unlocking the safe. hack the computer for the turrents and then destroy them, you get the exp for the hacking and then exp for destroying the turrent.

which is better, to be good or evil? i only finished the good character...

If you just stick with the main story, you should be done plenty of time to resume your studies and improve your grades, with some more leftover time to boot.

Use VATS, use it a a lot, when you're in VATS you only take 10% of the damage you would normally take out of VATS. Not many people know this but Bethesda did it to make the game easy enough for the average gamer. Leveling up is not really necessary as the game difficulty levels up difficulty as you level up. This is not as noticeable as Oblivion because they made the enemy leveling up equation more complicated but it's still there. Sneaking around is a good idea, you can sneak around in the heaviest armour. Melee skills are pretty useless, stay away. Big guns as well. If you're in Rivet City now, your probably just past the half way point or around there. You don't have too much game left. So I would suggest exploring now before continuing to find your Pops. If you start finding the game too easy, like I did, I found a nice overhaul mod that suits anyone looking for more of a challenge. It makes enemies more tougher, weapons do a lot more damage, 2-3 stabs with a knife and your done. The movement speed is increased %12 thus enemies can easily flank you in VATS, it takes the 10% damage out of VATS (it might as well be cheating leaving it in there). Changes the barter mode so you cannot get rich quick and easy, for example a stimpack costs 900 caps. Crippling limbs and legs now have drastic effects so it adds more tactics to the game, skills and perks have been revamped, the list goes on and on. You can find all the information you want by copy and pasting this link. http://home.comcast.net/~xodarap777/XFO/XFO_Readme_Current.html Sorry I don't know how to make that link clickable.
