So I've heard AMAZING things about the fallout series from my friends. I figured I'd buy a $29 game (Older, but still) to see if I like it, rather then buying the new, more expensive one first. Anyway, my question is.. is it worth the extra $10 for the game of the year edition? If I end up loving it, can I go back and get the extra 5 map packs for the same price?

PS: I won't play it online - just maingame.

Definitely worth the extra 10 for GOTY, some of the DLCs bring great new features and interesting content.

Those are not map packs, they are way more and each costs 10$ (if you buy the game at 29$, you'll have to pay another 50$ to get all the DLCs - that is if you don't get the retail DLCs that are cheaper but you'll still pay several tenths of $) and this is a singleplayer only game, it has no multiplayer.

You should give Fallout and Fallout 2 a try too, the Fallout series didn't start with Fallout 3 :)

Useful, thank you!

Also, I know it didn't start with Fallout 3. But I personally need good graphics, or I won't play a game. :-p

It kinda did since Fallout 3 isn't really related to 1 and 2 and he might not be excited about playing some old games that most would like just for nostalgia.

I would recommend you don't buy it. You obviously know nothing about the game. Have you ever played an rpg before?

That is a horrible rule to live by. Some of the best games have "antiquated" graphics. The original fallout games being a strong example.

not really. Some people don't want to look at games that are total ****. Good gameplay won't always keep my attention if the game looks disgusting. I have exceptions though.

This exhange brings to mind something I've been thinking about. One of the main arguments pc gamers use as positive evidence that pc gaming is superior to console gaming is that the graphics are better in pc version of games; this is true. Graphics are better on pc games as long as you have the hardware to support it. Since this is true, I find it odd that many pc gamers will also say that graphics are not the most important thing about a game, yet they use graphical superiority as a main point every time they get into a discussion as to why pc gaming is superior to console gaming. Just a thought.

Personally, I love great graphics and to max out my games whenever possible. But, I agree that a game doesn't have to have amazing graphics to be a great game. Cases in point being, Deus Ex or System Shock 2.

Have fun with Fallout 3, OP. There are some good mods that will improve gameplay and the environment if you're interested; off the top of my head, I'd recommend Fellout and F03 Wanderer's Edition.

This convo got way off topic. TC, pick up the GOTY edition. You will love it. Sure, there are some very vocal Fallout3 haters on this board, but I thought it was an absolutely fantastic game. I bought the vanilla version near launch and then the GOTY version also (since it was cheaper than buying the DLC packs). You will probably get 20-30 hours of extra gameplay from the GOTY additions.

yeah it did get off topic. I have never played Fallout 3 but I plan to soon. My friend owns the Game of the Year edition and he says it's worth it. He says the ending of the game was disappointing but the amount of content he got with GOTY edition made up for that. I believe Fallout 3 is made by the same company as Oblivion (Elder Scrolls) and uses the same engine. So there is probably a mod community out there with some awesome stuff.

Yep, you got it exactly right! There is a very extensive mod community for Fallout3. I'm sorry to say I neglected mods during my 2 playthroughs but most people rave about how great some of the mods are.

Generally, it's the same for me. I still enjoy certain oldies like Mario for SNES, a couple N64 games, etc.. but that's usually just for nostalgia. Any games I'm playing for the first time that have bad graphics lose my attention very quickly.
