FO3 simply exploring in FO3 was better than Oblivion and the main quest in oblivion is boring.

FO3 for me, I liked the game better in general, the rpg system, the npcs, alot of the quests, the world, and the weapons all felt better and more diverse to me.

And exploration was a great deal more interresting, due to what y ou could find, and how odd some of the "dungeons" were.

I played oblivion more simply because i enjoyed the freedom and green spaces and of course swords and bows and arrows :P Fallout 3 is a superior game mainly because it was based on the oblivion engine and fixes near on all of the problems with it. So Oblivion i enjoyed more but fallout 3 was still an overall better game.

Oblivion had the guilds, Fallout had the guns - they both had strengths and weaknesses

but 2 of my favourite games

I did prefer Fallout 3 over oblivion, although they do have quite some things in common i still preferred the guns over the sword and shield.

Both games are good, got bored of both before finnishing it though... If I had to pick one I would go with Fallout 3 though... maybe due to the fact that I'm a old Fallout fan if nothing else. I also feel that Fallout kind of got to the point a bit quicker than Oblivion, that wasgood, but dragged out a bit sometimes.

Looking forward to New Vegas... and the next Eldar Scrolls.... whenever that might be:)

Fallout 3 definitely. But I'm installing loads of mods for Oblivion right now, hopefully it'll be more fun.

Never played either, but I like Morrowind.

Should I shell out for Oblivion GOTY or FO3 GOTY?

Fallout 3 GOTYE!

Or possibly wait for a sale on the games when New Vegas comes out on steam since they already had one a few months back.

True, but honestly its already an absolutely a bargain with all that content. I guess he wins either way whether he waits or not :)

In my opinion both games were cold and boring. Not to mention massive disappointments in their own right.

FO3. The world of Oblivion was more interesting because of some of the lore, but the wilderness itself is horrible. Every grassy area looks fake and much too green. It freaks me out, actually, how dreamlike the fauna looks. It ruins the atmosphere for me.

What it came down to for me was atmosphere. I think Fallout 3 nailed it.

Both have strengths and weaknesses... Oblivion is honestly a much bigger game. I'd say about 3 times as much content as Fallout. Fallout 3 is more polished out the door, but post-mods they are about equally playable... But there are waaay more mods for Oblivion. Huge gigantic mods, whereas Fallout 3 certainly isn't lacking... there just aren't near so many. There's some really insane mods of Oblivion. Look at Nehrim.

Oblivion is long and average. Huge map, lots of quests, guild factions, tons of character builds. Some problems with monsters scaling too powerful when you get to higher levels. There's a ton of content there, but it never gets addictive fun. Weak DLC, usually a free house with little or no quests or cosmetic stuff like Mage Tomes and Horse Armor. All the NPCs use the same 4 or so voice actors. Fallout 3 is short and sweet. Much smaller map, fewer quests, fewer character builds. However, it's a much more polished game compared to Oblivion. Pretty good monster scaling. Better DLC, new zones and questlines for each one. Good number of voice actors, so most NPCs feel different. The perks system keeps you wanting to level up. You can't get the best gear easily, so loot is always interesting. This is all for the vanilla games though. If you include mods, both games are awesome. Mods pretty much fix any problems these games had. Oblivion has mods to overhaul the whole game with unique NPCs, more quests, and fix monster scaling. Fallout 3 has mods to make surviving the wastes harder, more realistic.

Oblivion was more fun to explore and it had the guild missions.

Fallout 3 had a more interesting world and better atmosphere.

Morrowind, is much better than both...

i've only played fallout 3, but oblivion is in the post now.

fallout 3 got pretty boring imo, the main story was really really lame and the side quests were interesting, but never really engaging. the atmosphere and environment are incredible, but i needed a good central story to keep me interested, the side quests didn't seem connected either, just separate episodes. i'm not saying it's a bad game, it's astonishing in some aspects, but it's not the sort that can keep me interested for long.

we'll see how oblivion fares, how are the side quests in that? the assassins and thieves guilds etc look pretty cool

The main story line is pretty standard (nothing special) with so-so voice acting. Really, Oblivion is a big game with 5 story lines (main story and 4 guilds). The Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood (assassins) were my two favorites. There are a lot of side quests that aren't related to any of the story lines. The mod community is what makes Oblivion a great game. Without the mods then Oblivion is just another good game among many.

I like the Elder Scrolls universe more than Fallout but I liked Fallout 3 much better as a game than Oblivion. I completely ignored FO3 until it was released. I remember watching one gameplay video and thought it looked ridiculous. But then I actually played it and fell in love.

combat, exploration, character development (perks/expereince points), voice acting, story, and quests were all more intersting and fun in FO3 in my opinion. Remember in Oblivion how enemies scale in level and equipment? Eventually lowly banits aquire Daedric armor and weapons for some reason. In FO3, raiders don't suddenly become equipped with power armor and gattling lasers. As you get more powerful their equipment stays the same.
