I love how it seems like everyone is trying to grab a piece of the MMO pie now. Surely all of these devs realize that moreso than most genres, MMOs cannibalize the sales of each other. It seems like these games keep constantly coming out lately, enjoying a lot of hype right around release, and then a couple months later everyone decides the new one really still isn't as good as WoW, or if it is, it's basically the same thing.
Quality MMOs are so expensive to produce, and of course most people once they are invested in one are not going to get into another one unless they both already quit whatever one they were playing and are actually looking for a new one to play. The market is just getting saturated with MMOs and with the development costs oassociated with the genre, I can't help but think that some of these companies or maybe even most of them are going to end up losing money on them.
I sometimes imagine in my mind the suits at some of these companies looking merely at financial data, seeing how much of the video game market revenue comes from World of Warcraft alone, and saying, "Hey, we should do that." The way I look at it is that World of Warcraft is kind of like eBay. Sure, you can make another auction site, and maybe it has some better features than eBay, and maybe it's even just plain better than eBay, but at the end of the day ebay / World of Warcraft is where everyone else is and thus it's a really hard sell for a lot of people to switch to something else. (The difference of course is that a game can theoretically always be improved upon whereas an auction is an auction is an auction.)

Your argument fails, because of one fatal flaw. MMOs dont always last forever. Most people on WoW, seeing as how it is pretty old, already have a lvl 70 character (more than one in most cases) and have already experienced most of the content on it. Sure theres expansions but they only go so far, and then its just the same old grind. It is this mass market that these MMOs are targetting. Yes its the core gameplay values are the same, but alot of these people are just looking for a game good enough to start over anew, a new culture, or maybe even just a chance to get the name you wanted to pick but was already taken.
Sure WoW will probably never be "killed" by one single game, but there certainly are alot of people moving on, so I can assure you these people are probably not losing money.
