It depends.

It may take out some of the fun, but can also stop you from missing things

I remember Fallout Wiki had a pretty good guide for choosing the right skill points for different game styles. By skill points I mean those that range from 1 to 10. I think that would be a good read, the rest you should "discover" yourself. Just remember to save often.

I would suggest not using a strategy guide. It's better to explore the world on your own.

I'd personally just recommend exploring the game for yourself...even if you do miss stuff there's so much crammed into these games it really won't matter. With that said, if you do want a guide it's probably just better to use the wiki's out there instead of buying a guide.

The guides have good charts for reference.  If you are looking for a particular item, the charts in the back are awesome.  Also take a look at the list of Perks in the front, and plan out your build.

It's best if you explore the massive world yourself, rather than reading it first. Invest plenty of hours into the game and finish the main quest along with DLC, side quests, factions. When you begin to feel bored. That's when you should look into guides, walkthroughs, wiki sites, for anything you might have missed. I'd admit though, it's tempting for me to buy game guides when they include posters. I like to collect that kind of stuff.

Yes and no. Exploring is pretty boring the world is dull, there isn't much going on, towns are small and barely have any people, and combat is easy. So I might use them to find things. The games aren't complicated and you don't make any kind of interesting decisions or dialogue choices (especially not in 3) so there is no reason to have a guide other than for finding locations on the map.

I played them without guides and I have had tons of fun with them with hundreds of hours on each.
