So I heard some good things about the fallout series and realized I might of passed up a gem when it came out in the 90's. So I tracked down a copy and cannot get into it. I like the setting and the atmosphere, but the turn based gameplay is yecky IMO.

So my question for you PC elite is that if I don't like fallout 1, should I bother trying to find fallout 2? Is it much different?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think you would like Fallout 2. It is similar to Fallout in many ways including the turn based ganeplay you dislike. You may like the upcoming Fallout 3 if you like Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series.

I just started playing Fallout 2 and I love it (without the really good mod/patch too). I don't know if it is significantly better then the first but I do know in the beggining the combat system sucks but gets much better as you progress.

Choose the Bloody Mess perk, I'm sure you'll love the combat then:lol:

If turn-based tactical combat games are not your thing, then any of the current Fallout games are definitely NOT for you. Nor, for that matter, would the X-Com games be right for you, either...no matter how awesome they be.

When i first started playing Fallout, i didn't like the combat system. But IMO, the story drove me to keep playing even though the combat wasn't my favourite. But yeah, you might like Fallout 3 when it comes out, im definitly looking forward to it : )

Already have a checklist for FO3. First thing I'm going to do is set off a nuke. Second thing is probably mod a drivable M1 Abrams into the game :D.

I also hated turn based RPG combat before playing Fallout (and still do), but Fallout really grew on me. In the opening stages where you're struggling to stab rats even though they're giant and standing next to you, it can be pretty frustrating, but by the time you have skills, perks and weapons, it can become an absolute pleasure.

You're missing out on an amazing game by skipping Fallout, though. I'd recommend you restart with 9 agility and set combat difficulty to easy. You'll breeze through fights easily enough, and you'll be able to get over the early suckiness hump and enjoy the juicy roleplaying. Once you're a little in, set it back to normal and enjoy one of the best games ever made.

Seriously, if you enjoy deep roleplaying mechanics, you need to play Fallout. Besides, you could always just not fight - read up on non-combat character builds.

Like's been said; Fallout 2 is more of the same gameplay, so don't bother if you don't like Fallout. But how long have you been playing? Because I would really suggest to stick with it. The turn based combat is a little tedious at first, because you have very few action points and there's really only one useful strategy, but once your character gets better the system adds a multitude of interesting options (who to attack, where on their body to strike, take cover behind enemies etc.). If done right, simple tactics will allow you to come out victorious even when being outnumbered and/or outgunned. It really gives you a lot more control over combat as say oblivion where you just aim, click and repeat as fast as it will let you.

Other then that, the combat is pretty much as large a part of the game as you make it. You can avoid or talk your way out of most cofrontations if you develop your character accordingly.

Get small arms skill up to 299 and start yelling "Go for the eyes, Boo! GO FOR THE EYES!" (oh, and name your sniper rifle 'Boo').

if you're only fighting rats and scorpions, try the game for a little bit longer; when you start getting some nice weapons and start killing humans, that's when the fun (combat-wise) begins.

The most different of all the original Fallout games was Fallout Tactics, that one's hard to find though. It gives you control of, I think 4 characters, maybe it's 6, it's been a while... It is still turn based though, so it may not appeal to you either, but really, give the game a chance! Most of us, I know I did, got pulled into it before full 3d environments and dime a dozen RTS's, but I can understand the lack of interest now. Wait for Fallout 3 hopefully it doesn't disappoint!
