Hey,

I just bought a new heatsink/fan for my cpu, and it came with a separate fan speed knob. If I hook it up, can that make the fan go any faster than it would without the fan controller? Or does it just make it go slower if you want it quieter, and the max speed is still the same?

By default I believe the fan runs at the maximum speed without a controller so adding the controller would only let you slow it down.

IF you don't connect it, it should be controlled by the motherboard most do some may just leave 100%. I would reccomend installing it it if includes one. I beleive 4pin lets motherboard dcontrol it if its 3 pin I think it will just run 100% you can quote me on this I am not s100% sure.

See if you can push your fan in SpeedFan, otherwise it would be dangerous.

Fan control can be risky, since you are directly lowering the potential on your 5v rail, I doubt anything would try to push your rails just to speed up a fan, so no I guess.

Fan-mates are nice though, good for acoustics.

fm2 btw?

I don't know, I allready installed it, in fact I'm not sure it's a fanmate. It came with the zalman 7000b, and just says fan speed controller on the specs. My mobo controls the speed, I am sure of that. Basically I was just wondering if there is an amplifier in the speed controller, which would result in faster speeds, but for that I believe it would need another voltage source (not sure though)

I believe fanmates can only lower the potential, but that's an interesting concept, idk if I'd want to try it though.

As for it being a fanmate, it is. ^_-

Small black box with a clicky knob right?
