Hello everyone!

The lastest book trilogy I've picked up is partly about assassins, so that kind of sparked an interest and I was wondering if there are any good, dark, stealthy fantasy games out there? Obviously I checked out Assassin's Creed first, but while the game does look alright (considering I normally steer completely clear of such games), the game itself looks terribly easy and very "light", meaning I'd prefer a dark fantasy setting where you kill #!&%ers.

I know Oblivion has The Dark Brotherhood guild, and I never tried that. How much gameplay would I get out of it? Being an assassin is one thing, but to actually feel that you have to set up a kill; prepare properly and such, and not just run in, find target and execute, is what I am looking for.

Now that I think of it, I don't think it exists... but you guys might know something or be able to suggest something!

Thanks in advance

You might find what you're looking for in the "Thief" series.

Edit : look up Hitman as well, although it's not in a fantasy setting.

Thief series. and.... AC isn't particularly light, especially the conspiracy and the backstory parts. But it isn't really "dark" either, so I guess you won't like it. But the game itself is great, expecially the 2nd and 3rd game, but they aren't exactly "fantasy".

Planning? No, the Dark Brotherhood quests are more or less similar to how you always play the game (rush in and kill). Atleast that's how the quests were when I played Oblivion.

Thief (as said by the previous users) requires a lot of thinking and is not a game where you want to rush in. Playing it in the hardest difficulty is very challenging. The games are pretty old and bit dated.

Are you sure you want only fantasy games?

Alpha Protocol? Though it's not fantasy, of course. Thief series is closer to what you're looking for, though you're stealing instead of killing, but they're a bit old. If you can get past the dated graphics, the gameplay is still good though. You can play several turn-based RPGs the way you're describing, where you're forced to plan ahead, set up traps and such, but I don't think that's quite what you're looking for. (Though if it is, give Dragon Age on hardest difficulty a shot.)

I'd definitely prefer fantasy games yeah, but I am open to other games if they are solid. I only ever tried the very first Hitman so I have no idea if the others are any good.

Do you have any suggestions? I appreciate the help!

Assassin's Creed is NOT light as you say. You find yourself in the middle of a conspiracy, your family is executed, you learn that everything you know is a lie. And if you're looking for a game where you prepare for an assassination AC and II are the best games. There are aroun 14 targets so 14 assassination missions. All of the other missions involve getting ready for the hit, taking down some of the guards, making sure you have friends that will help you escape ASO.

Ah yeah, but when I say light I was referring to the atmosphere of the game. I watched the GameSpot review which featured gameplay, and it's not like you're sneaking in shadows. You seem to just kind of walk up to guys and hit them in the face. It seemed very Xbox'y, with jumping on roofs etc... Xbox players might enjoy that, but I wouldn't personally. I am sure the game is very good, but I'd still prefer something darker (both story- and atmosphere wise)

Well... there is the Commandos series. A word of caution : the games in this series are hard. Just check a video on Youtube. You need a lot of planning and some really good skills to make it through each level.

Another game is Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood. It's similar to the Commandos series.

You could try the Death to Spies games, they aren't Fantasy, but they are very good stealth games. You could also try the latest Hitman game, though once again it's not Fantasy either. Only other one I can think of is Velvet Assassin, but that takes place in WWII, so not Fantasy again. I feel you will have a hard time finding any stealth based Fantasy assassination games.

Thief is what you're are looking for. Buy the thief collection it includes all 3 thief games it's really cheap. The graphics from the first 2 games are a bit outdated but Im sure there are mods out there that will fix that. :)

I would strongly recommend the hitman series since they are all about disguise and killing quietly dragging bodies and other stuff to avoid detection. I would also recommend splinter cell series. If you want more fantasy and assasination then Dark is a great game , it's a new game where you play as a vampire set out points as you get xp to choose new skills or upgrade skills and follow questlines. in this game you have to be stealthy to kill , you can either use your fist to kill a single enemy with a single punch wich can take some time or use a ability to kill an enemy. You die really fast if they are on to you and you cant kill several enemies at once so you have to plan how to kill them and where to kill them. using a ability costs blood and you get blood by sucking blood ofc but everything you do causes noice and might make the enemies suspicious , once they have found you or a body they will be looking for you for a really long time. The further you get the harder it gets as the enemies increases in numbers. Really fun game but it was to fast to clear it , i definently hope they will make more of this becouse it is just epic. Note: it is impossible to go on a killingspree rampage through the game, it takes to long to kill a single person for you to be able to kill more than 4 at once using all your blood and skills

Dishonored. Strange that only one person even mentioned it when it fits so perfectly into what you're looking for.

Skyrim is an option. In Skyrim you can actually try to act stealthily, and you can get in an area, find your goal, finish it and get out without enemies' notice. But remember, just don't upgrade your  stealth ability too high, or you will become basically invisible to AIs and lose the fun of acting stealthily...

I know the stealth mechanics were pretty light, but I always enjoyed the Elder Scrolls games.

and, of course, Thief.

Mod note - Necro thread.  Closed.
