Far Cry 2 is very different from Far Cry. FC2 is made by a whole different company. If you liked Far Cry play Crysis, it's made by the same company as FC, and has the same island jungle environments.
FC 2 is pretty damn horrible, or rather pretty damn lacking.
there are only 4-5 quests, and they are getting repeated into numbness, (Like doping the same mission 7 times to get a decent sniper rifle)
The enemies respawn all the time (based on distance, not time) and about 60-70% of the game is driving around roads.
They even lack factions, and have the most assinine reason why the people you work for, are shooting at you too.
And the story... well the general backstory is quite good to be honest, but the execution is very poor
Like the rest here have said, go with Crysis if you do not have it, it is ALOT more akin to far cry, then far cry 2 is
I personally liked FC2 a hell of a lot better than the first one, the gameplay is simply more rewarding in my opinion. If you are very unimaginative, you will find the game boring, but if you are creative the game will provide endless hours of sandbox fun. sure, the missions structures remain similar throughout, but the way you play each mission can vary wildly from sneaking in to running in with a flamethrower and burning down the village.
that being said, if you want a psuedo sequel, stick with crysis, which is a better game that both far cry and farcry2 .
Far Cry 2 seems to be more favorable by critics. 85% on www.metacritic.com
But less favorable reviews from individual players.
I got it for free, so to me its worth it. Although I do admit there where times in the game where I had no clue what the heck was going on.
[QUOTE="with_teeth26"]LOL, okay I guess I'm one of those people, 'cause I found FC2 the worst FPS I've played in long time.If you are very unimaginative, you will find the game boring, but if you are creative the game will provide endless hours of sandbox fun.

Yea i guess so, i'm not insulting you, I can easily see how this game could be construed as boring and repetative, I just had a total blast playing it because of the number of ways you can approach each situation. i will admit that the checkpoints were bloody annoying, but they did not prevent me from really enjoying the game right up until the end. If you play the game for long enough there are some really neat missions, one in which you escape from a prison and have to sneak through the jungle with nothing but a knife, in that missions all the traffic on the roads made it very tense and enjoyable. In another mission at the end of act 1/beginning of act 2 you have to defend a ferry as it crosses a large lake. these missions were sread out, but common enough to keep the gameplay varied and interesting. later on, the plot goes in multiple directions and there are actually a fair number of important choices to be made. i gave the game a 9/10.

Well I enjoy games that offer multiple ways to complete goals (which is why I liked the original FC and Crysis), unfortunately the repetitive gameplay elements such as the jeep patrols, guard posts and the massive amounts of driving killed it for me. You actually spent more time getting to a mission than you do in the actual mission. If there is ever a mod created to correct these game flaws I might give it another chance. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it but I would say most people that didn't enjoy it wasn't because they don't have imaginations, it's was because they found the gameplay to painfully frustrating.
If you want FarCry 2 because you liked the original, then get Crysis because it's the true FarCry2. FarCry2 has nothing to do with the original and isn't a good game in my opinion.

That is not entirely correct, although I do see where you're coming from.
Crysis, although developed by Crytek, also has nothing to do with FarCry and carries a completely different storyline, features completely different enemies, and carries with it gameplay features that make it much different (nanosuit and weapon customization, especially, whereas in FarCry you had to be very careful and collect health kits in the process).

i don't know, i had similar problems with the driving at first, especially during the gun shop missions, but i found later on the bus system could be used with great effect to break up the driving sections into short and acceptable chunks. I think that if you go into the game with a goal based mindset, like i need to get here, go there, blow up this, then you won't enjoy it. If you play the game for the ride and dont rush, you will find yourself having fun with the checkpoints, toying with the mercs, and so on. Most of the things that made people hate this game really didn't bother me that much. i dunno why.
Personaly my biggest problem with the game was not the games fault, but my obsessive need to constantly take screenshots because the game looked so damn good. i found the beutiful landscape helped me through the longer drives, i was enjoying the scenery so much i didn't care how long the drive took, like going on a road trip through the rockies. The highway is long and winding, and you might have to stop a couple of times for traffic, wild animals, and to take a wiz, but the the mountains are so spectacular that all this is forgotton.
