yay~! though now that i look at the benchmark results, it doesn't seem like having a quad core helps all that much. i mean, the e8400 seems like the best value of the lot. great price for the second best cpu among those tested. :|

Looks like my E8400/HD4850 budget machine will do pretty well. Too bad I need to finish Fallout 3 first. Or do I...

Maybe he is talking about the special not so official, not so legal Fallout 3 edition, otherwise I can't see how he can play it.

No, it doesn't. Based on those results, the quad-cores are getting performance typical of a game with little to no multi-threading. I can say with certainty that Far Cry 2 is not specially threaded to take advantage of four cores. If it were, even the Q6600 would be far above the E8400's performance. PC Games Hardware is mistaken to just say it's optimized for multi-core. From their tests, it looks like it puts most of the workload on cores 1 and 2, with some additional on core 3 and barely any designated for core 4 (in other words, it's mostly just optimized for dual-core). And based on the framerate numbers, it puts so little on cores 3 and 4 that it doesn't really make much difference, and the Wolfdales are still the best price-performance processors you can get for this game. Would be nice if they had tested the E8500 and E8600, too, but I have a feeling they didn't want to undermine their thesis on the CPU side of "Far Cry 2 is multi-threaded!!" by doing that.

I had a feeling getting Quad would pay off eventually...YoZbaNaToR

Perhaps someday, but not with Far Cry 2, I'm afraid.

Anyway, I'm glad to see I'll be able to max this game out entirely at 1600x1200. Should be able to put at least 2X AA on, too. :)

Well seeing it performs as well as a E8400 3.0Ghz does mean something.

Nah, it's really that I have Fallout3 on preorder and I'm currently trying to finish The Witcher, and I don't think there will be any time for FC2 in between. Rest assured, as soon as I beat Fallout3 I will be getting this.

I didn't check the preview yet, but I'll take your word for it...

DAMN! Looks like my mission for finding a game that works best with Quad has failed. I guess it's time for a downgrade.

Well seeing it performs as well as a E8400 3.0Ghz does mean something.

Until you turn the resolution up, then it's a different story. That's likely because those things that the game is multi-threaded for become a less significant part of the impact on performance when you increase the resolution, and the greater raw processing power of the Wolfdale becomes more significant than the additional cores of the Q6600 (which again, wouldn't be the case if FC2 was properly designed to utilize each and every core on a quad-core; it'd be far above any dual-core at any res).

And it doesn't really matter that the Q6600 can equal the E8400 because it's still more expensive. Far Cry 2 is designed to take advantage of additional cores more than most games (by a tiny bit), but not enough for it to mean Kentsfield/Yorkfield > Wolfdale in FC2.

a reminder that your pc supports dx10 and your resolution can be set really high and 2 videocards provide antialising x32 is not maxing out the game is overdoing it, with 8x antialising you wont neeed more and resolution? buy a home cinema...

Forgot to mention, it looks like Crossfire doesn't scale really well in this game. So for those who want to play it at 2560x1600 with AA and AF, SLI'd GT200's would be optimal, it seems.

Aslong as the "Can you run it?" site isn't lying when it's telling me that my 2 year old Intel Core 2 Duo Prossesors can handle the reccomended then I'm content, if not then I'll curse and order a new one.
Hopefully I won't have to do that.

Dammit, i hope ATI has a good driver in the works for crossfireX, because if not i wouldn't be able to max out this at my native res.

All those benchies were dx10? I guess we can expect 20% more with dx9, but maybe no AA.
