Far Cry 2 - Good or Bad?

I see a lot of threads on this board about Far Cry 2. People saying its terrible and people saying its great. This thread I made is to discuss Far Cry 2, what your likes and dislikes are about it. Whats different about this thread from all of the others? I am asking that people refrain from comparing it to Crysis or STALKER. Yes they're both good games, but this is about Far Cry 2.

So, I'll start.

I'm enjoying Far Cry and I'm about 5 hours in. Most people here complain about driving and the too big of map, guard posts with respawning enemies, etc. I don't mind driving or the guard posts. Why? I drive off-road, this is a simply solution to the problem. If you get bottle-necked into a place that requires you to go through a guard post, simply crouch your way through the bushes and around the other side, or quietly hijack their Jeep.

It isn't without its flaws though, like jamming guns are a annoyance and sometimes idiotic enemies, but its a good game. 8.5/10 maybe good for consoles, but the PC should only get maybe 8/10 because it feels like a port. But a patch or a few mods could fix this up.

P.S. I thought I'd also make this thread for people considering to buy this game can see whats good and whats bad about it.

How you heal. (With those syringes). I find it very strange to be able to just plop a syringe into your arm to heal your entire body.

And very little AI problems. I found that sometimes they don't react like humans. Like, when you are standing in front of them they don't melee or anything, which seems weird.

In between choices 1 and 2. Wouldn't call it awesome, wouldn't call it average. It's an excellent game, like 8.5-ish for me.JP_Russell

agreed. i'm selling my copy right now actually. i bought it cos of the multiplayer, and it was below avarage by PC Online FPS standards. at least in my opinion.

singleplayer was ok, but i stopped playing it too after i realized the respawning, wich sometimes happened literally in front of your face.

the game ain't that bad, but little above avarage at best. disappointment when you're waiting for a GOTY after all the hype.

But overall i give Far Cry 2, 9.6/9.8. Poonybug

I assumed the syringes were just a type of painkiller, like morphine etc

I'm in love with it. Yeah its got flaws but what game doesn't? If you don't like repetition, don't play it. Any time you have an enormous open world you're going to encounter repitition. But here are some things I love.

Fire. There is so much crazy **** you can do with fire. I lit a tree up and one of the burning branches broke and hit the ground and lit the grass on fire.

Surgeries. Sometimes I intentionally take damage just to see my guy perform surgeries on himself. Definitely one of the coolest aspects of the game.

AI. Why are so many people saying the AI sucks? I've found it to be quite good, especially considering the huge open world. Enemies hide and take cover if you are sniping at them and they don't know where you are. They will jump in vehicles to chase you if you run. They will try to ram you with those vehicles if you are on foot. I have definitely not found any noticable shortcomings in the AI and I haven't seen a good argument against that yet.

Stealth. It actually works unlike the original Far Cry. Enemies don't instantly know where you are when you are sniping and will take two or three shots before they realize the direction you're shooting from. And if you duck out of sight and flank them they will still be looking in the direction they last saw you.

These are just a few of the things I love about this game, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves FPS's.

i want a huge worldmap and drive around

i want a map editor

i want a lot of real guns

i like its ai

i like its features

so despite being good or bad its what i want!

I agree with this, though I still wouldn't quite call it excellent all the time...sometimes it's excellent, sometimes its pretty average. I think you just need to have a lot of patience and quite a high frustration threshold at times. With some of the broken mechanics mended and a game world which feels more "living and breathing" this could've been a classic. It is still a great game with fantastic atmosphere and arguably very fun shooter mechanics. Here's hoping Far Cry 3 can deliver the goods.

I agree and understand. The mission editor/creater is worth the money alone. The game a 9.0 and the Mission creater a 10.0 once you get the hang of it it is easy to create missions. I'm new to creating maps but this is great.
