Anyone else really hate the mash of shadows that're everywhere? The contrast on the shadows is far too high, and they're far to defined. It makes the ground look like a mess, and it's hard to appreciate the lovely textures. Has someone worked out where the config file is, that we can edit to blur and lower the contrast of shading? I tried turning the shadows off, but that looks worse.

When you look out your window, don't you hate all those shadows clouding your beautiful view?

The shadows look ugly when its on low or medium settings. Once you turn it up to high or more, it looks great.

Far Cry 2 has some of the best shadows I've seen in a game.

Ironic really actually considering the people don't cast shadows.

I have everything on Ultra.

www.explorecrete.com/nature/images/olive-tree.jpg< That is how shadows should look.

img.photobucket.com/albums/v690/roguetide/2-3.jpg< Look how convoluted the shadow is, each leaf is far too crisp. Everything casts these sort of shadows.

img.photobucket.com/albums/v690/roguetide/1-5.jpg

It makes spotting enemies 20x harder, cuz the shadows that hit them, camoflage them with the same shadows that are cast on the ground.

It needs bluring and slight distortion over distance. That's what i'm getting at.

It's a shame that putting them on high completely tears up my FPS.

Keeping them on medium makes them absolutely hideous, but I can deal.

the shadowing reminds me of stalkers, except they don't halve the frame rates like they do in that game. i have them on medium, and as long as you don't look to close their acceptable.

I'm playing the game on the highest settings at 1920x1200 and the first thing I thought about the game was how amazing the shadows actually looked.

I've had this experience too but found a solution, so I thought I'd join up and share it with you. I discovered it's not the quality of the shadows that cripples the frame rate, rather the distance in which the shadows start to be rendered. After I fixed this I'm able to use Ultra Quality shadows at the same FPS as Medium (and everything else on the highest settings too).

The trick is to alter the following variables in the console:

gfx_SunShadowRange0

gfx_SunShadowRange1

gfx_SunShadowRange2

The first two control how far away the Shadow LOD changes and the last one (the critical one for the FPS hit) changes how far away the shadows start to be rendered. For example, *Range2 on medium is set at 20, whereas on Ultra the setting is 140! Start with settings of 4, 8 and 20 and see how you get on.

I haven't yet found a way of getting the game to remember these values so I have to enter them in via the console every time I play. I suspect the reason for the crappy FPS at stock High or above is a slow CPU. I have an Athlon64 X2 4800+ OC'd to 2.6ish GHz (from 2.4GHz). My GPU is a 1GB HD4850.

Obviously YMMV but hopefully you'll find this useful.

Pete.

Who gives a flaming dog crap about the shadows? Seriously, do you hate it so much that you have to make a whole thread about it?

I personally think that the lighting and shadows in FC2 were brilliant.

bangell99

But the crispness of the shadows Bangel!! The Crispness!!

And who said gamers have too much time on their hands. If you are examining the so-called "cripness" of individual leaves then you can't be too absorbed in the game. It must be really boring.

Unless you just like the word crisp. Are you an avid Crisp chips eater? That could be part of the problem! Hehe, and this is coming from an Australian! We are officially the fatest country in the world you know!!

THanks, I'll try that out next time I play!

Alright then i'll admit that it isn't a universal problem, just my attention to detail. I'm actually **** about somehting else now;

Borrrring. Repetative much? 19% of the way in and I give up to play multiplayer. Congrats on 'diversity' Ubisoft.
