I just got Far Cry on the PC. The thing is, when I get outside for the first time in the first level, nearly everything is black. Basically, the ground and the sea are just solid black. I tried installing the latest patch, 1.4, but when I try and run it it says "Error reading setup initialization file". Can someone tell me what's going on, and how to fix it?

Did you download the cumulative patch (180Mb) or the other 127Mb one? Also, are you running XP or Vista?

I ran the game without any patches on XP without problems, but in Vista, I can't set graphics any higher than low or I get a blue haze over the whole screen from the get-go.

I had similar problem with ground being black. All I needed to do was update my drivers. If you got the patch from here I think they are labeled wrong, look for the one with most mb's.

I actually tried both patchs, they both gave me the same error message. My rig's a piece or crap - an old Dell (hiss) Dimension 2400, 2.4 Ghz, 1 GB RAM and the built in graphic card that came with it. I don't actually know the VRAM capacity of it, but it has run 64 Mb games before, and i'm sure one 128 Mb one as well. I've thought about drivers, but I don't know what to get, or if there's one I can get at all. The Control Panel calls the graphic card Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller. Any ideas for drivers?

Oh lord, that's what looks like GMA 800 otherwise known as "Intel Extreme Graphics 1". Never was the word extreme used in such a bad sense.........However Far Cry would run on a GMA 850 (Intel Extreme Graphics 2) and because of full shader support, the ground would be black and miscolored. Do yourself a favor and buy a cheap PCI or AGP graphics accelerator like a GeForce 6200. Cheap and easy to find.

I think your integrated graphics are to blame. I had a similar problem with my old 7800 GTX, patched the game, problem gone.
