Hi, I would like to know what are the fastest FPS games you know on the market?

I've made a list of games that I think are the fastest - moving and reacting time:

  • CS Surf maps
  • Tribes Ascend
  • Quake series
  • UT games
  • CoD 4 and above
  • Titanfall games (on close encounters)

Added with suggestions:

  • Toxikk
  • Doom

Do you agree with my list (not in any sort of order) or do you have any more games you think are fast paced? aiming for multiplayer but not a must.

CPMA, a mod for Quake 3 is extremely fast, much faster than Quake 3 stock or quake live.

There's two other games that I can't remember their names atm.

Deadcore is pretty fast, but I can not recommend it because it suffers from the Unity Engine 50hz physics which will kill your frame pacing. Toxikk has a nice pace to it too.

@PredatorRules: The new DOOM is fairly fast. Much faster than the average FPS.

Yeah I know it's in UT / Quake category (arena shooter), forgot to mention it.

@PredatorRules: Also Dishonored is insanely fast at high skill play although it's not a traditional FPS. I remember seeing speed runs that were insane.

Well, the new Shadow Warrior 2 is also fast, got moving speed upgrades, dashes and double jumps.

When it comes to fast-paced FPS, these are the kings (taking into account only the multiplayer portion of the games):

  • Quake
  • Quake II
  • Quake III: Arena

As much as I love UT games, they don't even get close.

I would've said UT and Quake too.

I prefer slower ones these days. Something that requires a bit of strategic thinking and that's not just about who points and clicks the mouse faster. I guess i'm getting old.

  • Titanfall
  • Titanfall 2

I would say Quake and UT, but haven't played one of those games in ages. Titanfall is a nice bland of modern shooters and more old school shooters.

@NakedHeadcrab: :So you're saying small maps packed with players and every 1-5 seconds someone pops infront of you and sometimes even 2 or 3 enemies isn't fast action? you've got to act fast if you want those players down.

That doesn't make sense, UT and Quake high level are around the same speed. The mechanics of the shooting are very different but player movement speed is close.

People forgot Reflex, Nexuiz, Xonotic, and a few others. Reflex is still alive, the others aren't really.

I'd say the 90's Quake games. I recall getting 120+ FPS on a P2-266/Voodoo 2 SLI at 1024x768. UT99 was somewhat more graphics intensive than the Quake games. So framerates were lower. Can't remember exactly. But, I know they weren't triple digits. In fact, I recall being shocked at how much lower they were than the Quake games. It didn't matter whether UT99 was run in D3D or OpenGL.

Wasnt there some indie game released not too long ago, super super low-fi, where you shot bullets out of your hands. It was demonic-based and you had basically machine gun and shotgun and that's it and it was pretty much hailed as the fastest shooter ever made? Totally forgot the name of it...

*Ah, DevilDaggers! That's the one

**and you shot daggers out your hands, not bullets lol

Absolutely fuckawesome. Finished the campaign in 3 sittings. The soundtrack, especially in hell, is out-of-this-world. Most fun i have had with a shooter in a long, long time.

@NakedHeadcrab: Whether or not you want to admit it Call of Duty IS really fast paced, especially the newer ones. Jet packs, wall riding, sliding, ect. Multiplayer CoD is a twitch shooter to the core, just not a very good one. CoD is pretty much solely reliant on reaction time. Battlefield on the other hand is very slow paced in comparison.

Crazy crazy soundtrack. Absolutely perfect to match the speed and mayhem of those encounters. Loved it.

Doom 2 wasn't that fast with the PCs at time of release. A year or two later? Sure.

Right at the start, Doom 2016 was faster with current machines.

I started Doom with an AMD 80386DX-40. Only good with the pixelated lo-res and green borders. It sucked.

At the time of Doom 2's release, I moved to an 80486DX2-66. Mmmmaybe fast enough. Nnnnnno.

A year later, I moved to a Pentium P-150. Yessssss! Then Quake came along and it sucked again. ;)

@jun_aka_pekto: I think they're talking about movement/combat speed. Not how well the games run on any given hardware.

Indeed, you should see speedruns - boy that movement is fast.

Hardware still plays a part. That's why you have to slow down many MS-DOS games (via DOSBox) when they're played on modern hardware. I played Doom starting with the shareware demo back in 1993. The movements didn't seem any quicker than Doom 2016 (SP or MP via IPX LAN).

Most aspects of the game went through the CPU back then. There were no graphics accelerator (2D or 3D) yet. When beefier CPUs came along , movements got quicker along with the framerates.
