Barbarian, always.
Half naked, fearless, and tossing around a great axe like its a baton.
If I can't be a barbarian I go with the highest damage melee class that is not a rogue/thief.
I prefer the combo warrior-mage classes myself, such as a Spellsword. Figure I can get the best of both worlds (armored + magic, fight + heal myself).
I've always been partial to Ranged damage dealers,....like in NWN2, I love my ranger with his wolf,...and secondary rougue skills, like lockpick and traps, I for some reason always use bows,...like in Oblivion I always prefered a good bow to a sword.
Since I play mostly DnD-based games, my character would most probably be (in order):
1.) The Item Guru. He'll have lore to identify any item in the game, and he'll have crafting up the wazoo. Sure, he won't be really strong in combat but that's what better items are for. This is probably the closest representation of myself I can have in a game.
2.) The Paladin. With a holy avenger. Introducing evil's buttocks to my boot. (Points if you get the reference).
3.) A Summoner. Could be a druid or a cleric, but focuses on buffing a summoned elemental / animal / demon. I've always been fascinated by summoning circles especially during my tabletop days -> I remember jumping around like a little girl when The Book of Vile Darkness was officially announced.
Sometimes I dabble in arcane spellcasting classes. I've never touched a Weapon Master powerbuild, mostly because I hate doing multiclass characters without RP justifications. I've played a monk twice in my whole gaming life, and I've never played a bard. Ever.
I like playing like a Trapper, but I haven't played many games where I set traps, so mostly I play as a Ranger
i play all kinds, as long as it's viable and rewarding in the long run. that's why i value class balance in a rpg. that said, i prefer an offensive approach, so i'm rarely a healer.
i would like to point out Guild Wars as having a great class system. it's incredibly deep and polished. a player will never run out of options, and however you play your class, it shines with style. gosh i miss that game.
Must say a sneaky archer or thief.
I never liked confrontations. If i could sneak kill people in real life i rather do that then to stand face to face when things are getting heated :o
Melee (or bow) / Caster. Unfortunately no game has done it the way I liked. I guess they were afraid it'd be too overpowered.
I go with Healer/Support or Tank types when possible.
Also enjoy playing ranged offense (Archer/Mage-types.)
I'm always the healer priest/cleric ect.
Don't like mages too much though.
I do like the stealthy rogue like classes too.
