I have always seen the fallout games like this:
FO1 has the best story by far, it was the first time into the wasteland, and I will always remember that game ^^
FO2 has the best mechanics, and so much content that it is almost silly. Story is not as good as FO1, but it is still good enough to push the game farwards. The humor became alot more slapstick.
FO: Tactics: had the best combat (It should, it is build up around combat afterall) story is lacking, but apart from that it is enjoyable.
FO3: I still dont consider it a FO game, I think it is quite good, but Calling it fallout (numeric sequal)is a bit iffy to me, I prefer thinking of it as a reboot of a sort, since it has nothing really in common with the first fallouts, not in gameplay or gameworld apart from a few overarching things, in my oppinion they should have left out the "3" It is not that I have a problem with it being a fallout game, but a numbered sequal, was doing the overall really good game a disfavor, if they called it something else,
FO:NV: Like FO3 I do not see it as a game in the same series as the old Fallouts, but rather a new series that shares name, I think it will be good aswell :) being made by quite a few people who also worked on the first 2 fallouts, I am sure they can string together a good game, with a good story.
I generally dislike game devs picking up old brands, and making games that does not resemble the old ones at all. If they wanted to make a game with the old name (especially as a numbered sequal) they should stick to the mechanics that was known in the old games, not that I dislike a reboot of a series, Fallout was all but dead as a game universe, so I am quite happy that Bethesta decided to make a new Fallout, and allowed other people to make them aswell, Guess by beef boils down to me preferring a name such as "Fallout: New wasteland stories" or something like that ;)
