All time ill have to say Everquest livel.Any game that sucks five years out of my life is worth that title..
Mafia. No other game has ever nailed the setting it is trying to achieve like Mafia nailed the 1930s gangster scene.
Ooof, too tough to call. Right now I would have to say Deus Ex
But, going by genre:
action: Halflife (series), runner up Crysis
action-RPG hybrid: Deus Ex, runner up Mass Effect
action-stealth: Thief (series, but specifically Thief 2), runner up Splinter Cell (series, but specifically Chaos Theory)
RPG: Neverwinter Nights (with expansions), runner up Knights of the Old Republic
non-MMO OnlineRPG: Diablo 2, runner up Titan Quest
MMO: World of Warcraft, runner up Auto Assault or Tabula Rasa
RTS: C&C (series, but specifically Red Alert 1), runner up Dune 2
TBS: Galactic Civilizations 2, runner up Alpha Centauri
Indie: World of Goo
Adventure: Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, runner up The Secret of Monkey Island
Space Simulation: Tie Fighter, runner up I-War 2, Tachyon The Fringe, and Darkstar One
Arcade Simulation: Crimson skies, runner up
Realistic Flight Simulation: Falcon 4.0, runner up Lock-on Moder Air Combat
RPG (my favorite genre) - VERY close between 'Betrayal at Krondor' and 'Baldur's Gate 2: The Shadows of Amn (+ The Throne of Bhaal)'
FPS - Deus Ex
Adventure - The Longest Journey
TBS - Master of Magic
RTS - Total Annihilation
MMO - Rising Force (original)
It's a tie between Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm. Reason? Well between the two you watch a society who due to their advancement and forgetting about an agreement they signed millennium ago, their homeworld is wiped off the map and they must stride to find their place in the galaxy and rediscover their original homeworld. Then you have a group of miners who are only just trying to help out with the war effort and they stumble across a entity known as the beast. It quickly takes hold of part of their ship, grows, and begins to threaten the galaxy. The lone miners go from being able to just mine with fighter support to developing full fledged dreadnoughts to counter the beast that they released on the galaxy.Cdscottie
Very good games...very good choices ! ....I'll add Homeworld 2 on to that list. But as a few others have mentioned...picking one game as a favorite of all time can be really difficult since there are so many good ones form over the years.
I know by giving a list I'm not answering the question to this topic correctly but I'll toss out just a few of the games that stood out as a great gaming experience for me or just plain fun...
Max Payne 1 & 2
Halo : Combat Evolved
the above mentioned Homeworld
Mechwarrior 2, 3, 4
DoW + expansions (NOT DoW 2)
Civilization III & IV
Supreme Commander : Forged Alliance
Serious Sam
All the Oddworld games
Galactic Civilization 2
Hitman 2
Deus Ex
System Shock 2
GTA III
Unreal Tournament
And many more...so I'll stop here.

Planescape,i have other games i like just as much on certain days. But i can only pick one which is a shame,so i go with this.
The best game I ever played have to be Enemy territory : Quake wars, its a game I consider the best ever but its a game I wouldent recommend to anyone. The game has a lurning curve which is directly comparable to learning how to fly a real life airplane.
The best singleplayer game of all time in my book would have to be Fable 2.
The reason I say that is because the Perfect World level gets to me everytime, I just cant stand it, its the only game/movie which has EVER made me feel anything and for that its the best game of all time.
Close runner ups would be :
The Witcher
Mass Effect
Vampire the masquardes : bloodlines
So to sum it up.
My favourite Game of all time : Enemy Territory : Quake Wars/fable 2
