single-player fps: half-life 2
multiplayer fps: team fortress 2
3rd person shooter: mass effect (ha! i just wanted to include it, cuz i'm loving it; but seriously, it compares favorably to other 3rd person shooters! in fact, i'd say that its shooting portions are better than those in any 3rd person shooter i've played, with the (possible) exception of the max payne series)
tactical shooters: rogue spear (clearly! though i'd like to mention mass effect again, cuz it kicks vegas' ass!!!)
rts: starcraft
tbs: master of magic
rpg: baldur's gate 2
action rpg: diablo 2
adventure: grim fandango
sports and best in any genre: front page sports: football pro '95
i haven't played other genres enough to warrant me naming the best in those genres, but i have a soft spot for gtr 2 for bringing the spirit of papyrus back, so i thought i'd mention the game at the very least.
