You should have read the reviews. The game is not as bad as you make it out to be, but it certainly isn't worthy of the F.E.A.R. name. I was disappointed too, but if you look at it as a standalone game and a simple FPS shooter, it gets the basic mechanics down pretty good.
the gameplay was fun enough, and the story was excellent imo.
I wouldnt call it a disappointment, more like a couple steps backwards
nope, I mean ya its happened... but games are getting dumbed down in general all over. gta wasnt as great until it hit console, but then gta iv was a step backwards as it was streamlined... i think this tells us whats happening. Even final fantasy has been streamlined and dumbed down, its not even a pc game.Has any1 else noticed great PC games that ended up on the console are always average at best?

[QUOTE="VeryBumpy"]dumbed down and consolized isnt the same. Console games are getting dumbed down too, its the mainstream effect. games for masses. Well, they also screwed up the dynamic shadows for FEAR 2. From what I've heard/seen, the console version actually has better shadow effects than the PC port.Fear2 is a great example of consolized.

Its that fear 2 turned out just like deus ex invisible war. The first was great but the second had changes that just did not meant to be done on the game. I can understanding mainstreaming a game to sell on consoles but what they did is to creat an inferior product with lack of inspiration.Fear2 is a great example of consolized.

Its all about making money, lots of multiplats and lots of dumbed down games. Games are still very fun, you just dont see games like FEAR 1 and Deus Ex much anymore since games like the sims, wow, call of duty, bioshock etc... sell much better. A great example, most people I know can not get into morrowind at all, but love oblivion... the sales reflect it too, even if you're only looking at the pc version.Fear2 is a great example of consolized.

exactly.
games, specifically console games, are developed for the LCD...the lowest common denominator. In short, despite the fact a game is rated M for mature( and thus made for someone with at least a high school education), many developers are making games simple (aka "dull") enough that your fingerpainting 8-year old cousin can play them with ease..."Look mommy, I punch this key, and that key, and the guy chops off his head!"
I like consoles; I like sitting on the couch playing co-op. I [used] to enjoy the various baseball and Madden games...I want to shout at developers and publishers "Console gamers are smart! They can handle a complex inventory systems found in PC RPGs. They can understand logistics and complex character creation!"
But no...we are left with 5-hour, dull, "wow factor" games (by that, I mean theyre cool to watch and "epic" and "badass" but essentially shallow concerning gameplay), and these standards trickle over to PC gaming. Multiplayer is equally shallow, generally consisting of vanilla cookie-cutter gameplay that, outside of environments and characters, plays the same from game to game.
Some developers have a little integrity left, and make true multiplatform titles: Bioware and DICE, for example, treat the PC version differently from the console version and cater to the various needs of both categories of gamers.
In short, I find the dumbing-down of console (and PC games) atrocious simply because instead of taking it to the next level, developers and publishers are taking steps backwards. Zero progress has been made since the original Xbox has hit the streets imo.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with simplicity. Look at Doom and Quake, or even Starcraft, for example: the appeal of those games is that they were incredibly easy for anyone to pick up and play. Their gameplay was straightforward, intuitive and satisfying; they just felt good to play. The difference with those games is that they were never marketed as being anything but simple. They weren't claiming to be "the most intense, realistic, tactical blah blah blah," they were dumb by design, and that's what made them great fun. Also, remember that every gamer has to start somewhere. We've all made the transition from simple and fun games to more complex and challenging ones. (And back again!) I believe it's only a matter of time before the newbie "hardcore" crowd of today graduates to wanting more out of their games. That's exactly what Nintendo was banking on with the Wii: that there were enough new gamers or potential new gamers out there to warrant putting out a console focused entirely on very simplistic games. And, as it turns out, they were right. But c'mon, you know we'd all love a game that had a key mapped to "Decapitate". :lol:games, specifically console games, are developed for the LCD...the lowest common denominator. I absolutely agree with you there. The bulk of today's games are exactly what you described (in bold) and they are, for the most part, largely disappointing to play as a long-time gamer. I hate to say it, but that's the mainstream for you. It caters definitively to the lowest common denominator. Like I said before, there's nothing wrong with simplistic games, but the degree to which today's mainstream takes itself seriously is ridiculous. It's also slightly offensive to those of us who actually played the truly hardcore games that didn't always paint everything in a pretty picture and wrap it up in a nice, big bow for you. I think most of us would probably be happy if the market at least offered some more "old-school" styled games that still had the complexities you described. Unfortunately, however, with the gaming industry being the titanic monster that is these days, publishers are less willing to take even a small risk on these niche (sadly) titles, even if there were more major developers out there who were still interested in making them. Instead, publishers would much rather pour a bunch of money onto half-assed sequel projects like F.E.A.R. 2 that don't actually have to be any good to sell copies. It's disgusting, really.I like consoles; I like sitting on the couch playing co-op. I just wanted to add real quick that MrBojangles25 you've also inspired me. You might not have realised it, seeing that I hardly post in threads these days, but I do read on here and you (bojangles) and AnnoyedDragon are my two favorite members here. That is all. :)

Neither deus ex invisible war or fear 2 did well on any platform. They didnt mainstream it, they wrecked it. If the mainstreamed it, it would be "streamed" to the public, however it did not since they messed the game up.[QUOTE="dakan45"][QUOTE="kevy619"] dumbed down and consolized isnt the same.
