I know that it is only the demo, but come on people! This demo doesn't lead me to believe that FEAR 2 is an improvement over the first one.

AI is just as good - now they can make cover, but that's about it. They're actually slower moving then they were in the first one. Have you ever tried to play FEAR without using your slowmo? It gets really tough in some spots. I went through about 90% of the demo without using slowmo....the game just feels slow compared to the first one.

Graphics are a notch better and it's nice that I can max everything out on my PC, just like I could with the first one.

You can carry more weapons this time around (if I remember correctly) and you get a slew of grenades, but they're not quite a fun to play with as the nades were in the first one.

The story unfolds the same way, bits of random flashes of crazy video and the attempt to be scary - which it's not, just like the first one.

Controls....I have to keep telling myself that this is a demo because the controls irritate me. I've got a 5 button mouse and in the first FEAR game, I could utilize all 5 buttons: Mouse 1 = fire, Mouse 2 = Zoom, Mouse 3 = flashlight, Mouse 4 = Melee, Mouse 5 = Slowmo. But in FEAR 2, you can't make use of Mouse 4 and 5. You can only bind Mouse 1-3, thus leaving me to try and bind out my other keys best as possible and most comfortable as possible....I'm not impressed. Hopefully in the final game we're allowed to make use of all our mouse buttons. Also, I want to say that you could lean left and right in the first fear, but you can't do so in the second one (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't played the first FEAR in over a year)

Overall, I pretty much felt like I was playing the origianl FEAR, but with better graphics. I'm not terribly impressed. From the demo, I'd give FEAR 2 a 6/10. maybe the full, finished game will house some improvements and the game will kick arse. I'm going to pass on this game and wait for it to fall in price before I bother picking up a copy.

My Thoughts: It sucks

Also can someone tell me whats the point of the sprint button? It dosen't make you run much faster. its a pointless add on that I won't use.

Yeah, the mouse thing really annoyed me too. Hey, is it just me, or was the sensitivity of the mouse WAY too high? I turned it down all it would go, but it still felt too sensitive for me.

I thought so too. It seemed like I would barely turn it a little and my character would flip completely around. :P

Yeah, the same thing happened to me and it confused the hell out of me. I tried to turn to my right, and instead it turned 180 degrees. So now I was facing my back, but I thought I was facing the right. I thought, "Oh you can go over here." Took me a while to realize it was where I had just come from.

Yeah i felt like it was really console-ish. The character is completely removed from the game world, making movement and the gameplay weird. And yes the mouse sensitivity was WAY out of wack. I really felt like Monolith could have done a much better job. They pulled a Deus Ex :IW with this one.

They could make in the first game too, but there weren't as many objects to use.

I've just finished the demo & i have to say that i'm not really impressed. This game looks like it's going to be good & worth getting but from this demo there's alot of problems which will make the experience less enjoyable.

My first problem is the fact that you can't lean. Why did that take this option away? I don't get it. With a game like this i'm shocked that they haven't added in the lean option or even better, some sort of cover system. Enemies take cover so why not you?

The weapons. Every weapon i used there was not much recoil going on. I had a sniper rifle & i noticed very little recoil at all even though it's a powerful weapon & would set you back a notch.

Where's the full screen? Why do we have to play this in the letter box style?

Flashlight? What flashlight? Does the character not carry any spare batteries with him? It feels like his flashlight is going to die any seconds because his batteries are low.

On the positive side, the AI is great. I was impressed with the way they took cover with the objects around them.

The cutscenes are also good, i got a few scares whilst walking down a corridor, maybe it's because i was playing in the dark with headphones on.

This is one of my most anticipated games of 2009. Although i'm saddened by the demo, i'm still going to get this game hoping i can get away from it's problems & enjoy the experience & enjoy Alma.

Sounds like your stock standard "dumbed down for consoles" game where the first was made or designed for PC-only, then the sequel is made with the mind of consoles first. This DDFC genre is quickly building momentum. New games are added every year. Other examples include Deus Ex: Invisible War and Oblivion.

Of course, I've yet to play it. I'm downloading it now. But this is what appears to be.

Eh, kinda dissapointing to hear. Still need to try the demo myself though. May just end up renting this on the 360 to find out what happens story wise unless I really enjoy the demo.

You can't be frickin serious????? FEAR 2 powns most games that are currently out. You failed to mention that you can ride in mechs now and devistate anything in your path... that to me can not be ignored. The graphics are drop dead gorgeous, the gun sound effects are insanely dead on, the creepy scary aspect is lacking I will admit, but overall this game is definitely a step forward compared to the past..oh yea the water...amazing. So You are so wrong buddy and maybe you should get off your old computer because that may be why you didn't get the whole beauty out of this game...jus a assumption of course.

I'm actually going to take back the comments I said earlier. I just played the FEAR 2 demo, and while I can see MINOR console changes, it was a lot better than I expected. I don't see what all the complaining is about. There are a lot more undeserving console games out there.

FEAR 2 plays a lot like FEAR. That's fine. It looks a hell of a lot better and the new effects are brilliant (blur, motion blur, film grain, water) and I'd say just as good as any game out there right now (bar Crysis of course). It feels natural, like a PC game. The combat is JUST as fun as I remembered it being in FEAR 1, and the cool things you can do in combat (slow-mo, melee kicks, nailgun) set the two games apart from other brickstandard FPSs. I never played the full version of FEAR (I only played the demo) but FEAR 2 looks to be continuing the story along the same path, and hasn't altered it to fit a bigger market or whatever (Red Faction 2 WTF).

It looks great, feels great, and I don't see where all the complaints are coming from. This is coming from a grizzled 90s gamer angry at the current state of gaming. IMO, FEAR 2 feels like a good addition to the genre, and it is in no way a DX:IW, Oblivion, FC2 from what I can tell.

Guys, this is ridiculous.

I uninstalled the demo and it didn't remove the desktop shortcut.

I try to manually delete it and it says it's no longer located on the desktop and it can't find it.

6/10 is pretty harsh it's only a demo, the fact that we get a demo at all is a damn nice change from most games these days that hit retail and never get demoed at all. The mouse button issue annoys me a bit, but I think that will probably be fixed, it can't be too hard.

OMG, don't let these people steer you in the wrong direction. I too almost believed half these haters, but then I downloaded the demo...and damn was I shockingly surprised on just how good this game is. It's very VERY hard to please me when it comes down to games and let me tell you as a harsh critic of Crysis, (which I did enjoy, despite it being a HUGE system hog) FEAR 2 is simply AMAZING. Check it out and you'll be shocked @ how crazy the people here in the forums are for saying this game is not good.

How can you call them ports? I mean it's been developed for PC to be released at the same time, it'd seem a stupid to make something on a PC, optimize it for consoles and then re-optimize it for PC from that. Does Farcry 2 even play badly performance wise anyway? If I can pull myself away from the other things I'm playing atm, I'll have to give this a look. I'm sure that Monolith will sort out any problems to do with game play, I mean they had a massive testing team for the original FEAR, and that played beautifully. The only thing that brought the first game down was the variation, so if anything I hope they've come up with a lot of new ideas.

Watched a friend play it.. Havn't bothered installing it yet.. But I must say I don't understand people who are complaining about the graphics.. It looks amazing.. Are people just trying to make a bench mark of crysis and anything below that sucks? The two complaints I did have, was the fact that there isn't a lean command which I used alot in the FEAR game, and the fact you are apparently able to carry all yoru weapons.. When in the original you could only carry 2 and your side arm.. Which I though was great, it made it strategic and made you make hard decisions in what you should use.

It is odviously clear games like FEAR 2 and Farcry 2 was developed for consoles FIRST than ported over the pc.. The interface, the menu..

I'm not going to start an argument about porting games, but I will put that the term port is over used and alot of people don't really know what a port really is and I doubt Ubisoft or Monolith are going to be that stupid to port a game to a platform they're meant to developing it for at the same time, that'd be a waste of time. Having the same menus and interfaces on all platorms is just poor design. I think alot of PC gamers need to grow up when it comes to poor games, just because it's on another platform doesn't make it a port. We PC gamers are meant to be the pinnacle of gaming, we're generally the older and smarter gamers. So why are we picking out games that are bad on all systems and saying they're ports when they most likley arn't. I do think alot of developers and publishers need to put more thought in to the PC version of games. I mean for these two games there target audience is mainly PC gamers.

I don't think it's harsh. There's really nothing terribly exciting about it.

Things I thought about FEAR 2:

  • has better graphics
  • worse controls (lack of good mouse button support - hopefully this is fixed)
  • same spooky-ish environments
  • a flashlight that well, seems rather useless
  • slower paced then the first FEAR
  • lacking ability to lean
  • the AI is just as good (if not better), which is nice; I see them utilize cover better and they verbalize more
  • the mouse senseativity is a little wack, but I've seen and played worse
  • the HUD is kind of a nice change, it looks crisp, but at the same time feels more geared towards consoles
  • the menu system just feels out of place, perhaps with some more time using it, it might be okay
  • I dislike the boxes that appear around items you can pickup - it's a little distracting, perhaps more time playing will fix that feeling
  • NPCs have a glossy apperance to them
  • sub-machine gun and assult rifle feel the same
  • shotgun range feels very limited, could be improved
  • sniper rifle doesn't recoil much, making targeting too simple
  • overall gameplay was the same - which isn't bad (don't fix what isn't broke), but at the same time it's kind of dull - you know, been there and done that
  • sprinting doesn't really feel like sprinting - more like a slow jog.

That's about all I can recall off the top of my head without playing some more. I just wasn't impressed. I know this is just a demo and things can be changed...and it is nice to get a demo out for people to try. Hopefully some of these things are improved upon - especially the controls.

If the controls were better, I would have scored it 7/10 and if it didn't quite feel like it was more geared to appealing console people (HUD, Menu, attraction boxes around items you can pick up and the glossy shine guys get when you're shotting them in slowmo) I would have given it an 8/10.

Dang, the more that I think about it, the more it irritates me that it has quite a few things to appeal to colsolers....ugh! I need to stop thinking about it and move on. And there is my reasoning behind my score, take it as you like.

It's just semantics. The only difference between FEAR 2 and a "true" port like Resi4 or Rise of the Argonauts is that this one has great optimisation.

[QUOTE="sSubZerOo"][QUOTE="zanelli"] How can you call them ports? I mean it's been developed for PC to be released at the same time, it'd seem a stupid to make something on a PC, optimize it for consoles and then re-optimize it for PC from that. Does Farcry 2 even play badly performance wise anyway? If I can pull myself away from the other things I'm playing atm, I'll have to give this a look. I'm sure that Monolith will sort out any problems to do with game play, I mean they had a massive testing team for the original FEAR, and that played beautifully. The only thing that brought the first game down was the variation, so if anything I hope they've come up with a lot of new ideas.zanelli

Noo what I am trying to tell you is its easy alot of times to find a average port.. How ? Because the menu interfaces and such are optemized for a gamepad and not a mouse and keyboard.. The menu screen, the ingame hud along with the other stuff is something CLEARLY made for a gamepad and it has nothing to do with poor design.. Now a days alot of multiplats are made for the console than the design is ported over adapting alot to the console interface. So yeah keep going on with it, I never said they were bad games.. I am just trying to tell you why it is easy to see that they are ports compared to a pc game thats a non port.

Piss poor key bindings + horrid mouse control for a FPS = eptasticfail

About the only thing improved in this game is the graphics. No improvment to AI (acutally quite the opposite). No improvement to gunplay. The scare factor wasn't increased much (darker, smaller corridors, strobe light instead of a flashlight).

I am sick to death of bad ports, FarCry2 made me cry and now this. couly
It's a huge problem - but I actually loved Far Cry 2.....
I was looking forward to playing the demo later on. Reading these threads has worried me. :?Tresca_
it's still worth downloading; the game is not BAD in any way, just a lot of the same with a few new environments. It runs pretty well even on a lowly system like mine and manages to look pretty good, I must say though.

Gimick.

Lack of customisable features.

Can't turn off smooth mouse and Sensitivity meter has sod all effect for those of us with gaming mice (sod off if you contradict this and you dpi above 2500).

Game turns people into n00bs. One person said I had slow reflexes because i'm a low sens gamer. But he was happy enough to chicken out of any games I offers duels in.

DX9 only.

Fear. Die.
