Well, Sims managed to tap into the female market rather than limit themselves to the young male market like a lot of games do.

WoW and Sims take up six of those places. Sigh... So much for PC-gamers being the 'elite of gamers'. Lol.artur79

WoW may not be EVE but it is more 'elite' than Call of Duty 4. I would say its more complex and hardcore than it too.

There are more "pro" clan type games for PC then console. Such as Counter Strike, Starcraft, and Warcraft 3. I don't see many big money making tournaments for console that PC games have, at least not with the same amount of skill.

What do you define as "elite?"

CoD4 is a fun experience. Just because a game isn't complex, doesn't mean it can't be fun (I would easily argue with you that it's more complex than most FPSs). WoW is fun during the first couple dozen levels (It does require a lot of time to play, which is why I never recommend it to anyone). I don't really care if PC is "elite." It has good games, good multiplayer support, and I love it. I don't see why Sims/WoW being the top sellers would give PC gaming a bad rep. In fact, it probably says that PC gaming appeals to everyone. Sims for those casual gamers and WoW for those non-stop gamers. SoaSE for complex/casual and hardcore RTS players. CoD4 for competitive FPS fans. Orange Box for casual FPS. Crysis for the people who are willing to spend tons of $ on hardware and who like open-ended gameplay with tons of moding capability (the fact that PC games can be so easily modded puts it years ahead of consoles).

Do people eat Sims game disks for breakfast?

I ask because on every top sellers list known to man, Sims occupies at least 4 of the top 10 slots. I mean at this rate I'd guess every North American household uses Sims DVD's for coasters.

The thing about console games is that they have a very specific demographic - 13 to 25 year old males, mostly, and their game charts reflect that.

How many girls do you know who own a 360? For me, it's none. But almost all of them own and game with computers (and Wiis) and play The Sims. How many fifty year olds do you know who own a 360. For me, it's none. But of the three fifty year old+ people I know, two own computers and they both play games like Rollercoaster Tycoon and The Sims.

PC gaming has no clearly defined demographic. Young and old, male and female. The Sims does so well because there's tens of millions of PC gamers of all ages and at least two genders, and The Sims is an appeals-to-all kinda game. You can't really criticise the "taste" of the PC gamer because it covers five, fifteen and fifty year olds.

The Sims being so popular doesn't mean that that's all that we're buying - it doesn't mean that X, Y and Z aren't selling to their target audience really well, it just means that their sales figures are being overshadowed because of the sheer volume of players outside of the "top ten" demographic that epitomises the console gamer. If the game charts could be sorted by age, and we looked at 13-25 year old males, there probably would be one Sims games in there, tops - possibly the same with WoW.

And similarly, if the consoles had the far reaching and universal appeal of the PC, their game charts would reflect that.

I see I stroke a chord here with my small remark, lol. I was half-joking though. Just wanted to bring some balance to this forum (maybe the wrong thread, but whatever), tired of reading elitist comments about consoles and it's userbase. You know, I do belong to it...

Like Mfsa said, it's not really about being elite, it's about demographic groups. I do disagree though on that older people do not play consoles. I know plenty of 30 year old guys with a console as well as a 40 yr old who borrowed my box and is having fun like never before.

"PC gaming has no clearly defined demographic. Young and old, male and female. The Sims does so well because there's tens of millions of PC gamers of all ages and at least two genders". I can say the same about PS2 and soon the Wii. Just saying... The demographic groups like 'typical console player' and 'the average PC-gamer' are starting to blend into each other. The times are changing, for the better if you ask me. Consoles will pretty much be PC's in a generation or two. They already are to some degree. More and more games are just as popular on consoles as they are on the PC.

My remark was not aimed at the PC-gaming population in general, only at the morons who for some reason think they're smarter or better than people with a gamepad in their hands.

artur79

I don't know any PC Gamers that think they are "smarter" or "better" than people with a gamepad. What they do enjoy is using a mouse and keyboard over a gamepad, as PC Gamers have the option, but they choose the better method in their opinion. Your perception is what needs to change. I'm sick of people telling me and others that we're "elitist" for preferring m/k to any other control form. For certain genres, it just works better on PC. Period.

Oh, and I'm one of your 30 year olds that has a PS3, 360, and a Wii. Most older gamers I know game on multiple platforms, and just enjoy the games, but still have their preference. Of course they're going to be an abundance of younger gamers on console, it's just less complicated and cheaper, given the fact that you can just rent games and use your standard TV. When parents are buying stuff for their kids, a console is just so much more convenient. Thankfully, I was raised in the 80's with both.

My point was that WoW is hardly casual, its probably the most 'hardcore' game on that list, especially if you consider the amount of time and money people put into it and its more complex than most console games and PC games on that list.

Absolutely. WoW is more hardcore than most games out there, and I can't think of one console game that even compares to it. It's larger and more expansive than any other title to date and is loaded with more content than multiple games combined into one. Anyone who suggests WoW is casual doesn't know what they are talking about. People confuse popularity with casual titles, which is 100% false in this case.

I said "people with a gamepad in their hands" simply because I was tired of typing "console gamer". I did not mean to start a argument on what the best controls-scheme is.

I've had the whole discussion about controls and preferences with Mfsa as well as other people, so I won't go into that again. Takes too much time to explain what I mean. I'll just say that I agree to some degree. Mouse and KB is better for certain games designed with that specific control-scheme in mind. I did not say a mouse user = elitist. That would be silly.

I mean, just read the remarks some of the users leave on these boards, the negative "better than you/ pwn you/ consoles suck"-baditude is annoying for someone like me. I just wanted to bring a little yin to the yang on this forum.

If a chart is just going to be filled with Sims expansion packs and WoW I'd rather see a Top 20 or Top 40 to see some games that I would actually want to buy.

And can someone explain who is actually still buying the sims? Either sales of all the other games must be crap, or there are a lot of people living under rocks to only just find the sims to buy.

Meh, who cares what some say. As a gamer of all platforms, it's far more annoying reading about "PC Gaming is dying" every other thread, but you just can't let it bother you. People are mostly living in their own world, and couldn't care to learn or relate to yours. The internet just brings it all out on the table. If we were all hanging out in a big room called Gamespot, over half the crap written in here would never be said to others, and probably wouldn't even be thought of.

Elitist snobs suck. End.Of.Story.

But you know what? I have no problems with PC gamers being proud and feeling they are gaming on the superior system.

Building your own gaming rig: learning the system, how the components work, researching the information, learning how to tweak your rig, delving into deeper details of the OS, taking advantage of the system flexibility, etc is something about PC gaming that immediately comes to mind. Not all PC gamers do this of course, but those that do, IMO, can feel superior in this area/field compared to the many (huge generalization here, if you aren't OK with that, please ignore ;)) that would simply have no interest or motivation behind such a project and take the simpler, one-size-fits-all console route.

Again, there are many other reasons one may choose consoles besides only interest and motivation. Available time is one such very legitimate reason, types of games for example is another. However, like I said, I think PC gamers can and should feel very proud about their gaming platform of choice.

I'm not disagreeing with you artur of course, this is just my opinionated opinion of an addendum :P
