In all seriousness, I've seen/heard a few while playing both Left4Dead and TeamFortress 2. It seems that female gamers tend to flock to more mature communities (although these days, I don't know if I would label the L4D community as "mature").

a friend of mine is dating the only confirmed female pc gamer on the interwebs. i have personally confirmed it guys, sorry to bust your bubble but everyone else saying they're a female is either a guy, a kid or the fbi.

For all we know jessica alba could secretly play cod 4 on pc or something. There are probably plenty of hot gaming girls, they just don't want you to know because then all the 12 year olds on servers start talking about cooties. If I were a hot gamer girl, i probably wouldn't talk on a mic in-game. Also they probably don't have a lot of friends that game (girl friends) so they play secretly. Although i know some cute girls that play halo 3 lol at my school!!! YAAAAA

But I've also never met another female gamer in person. I met a few online, but we are often hesitant to say because of the chat comments and /tells that are made. If the most vocal in the community weren't 12 year old boys, it might be different. Maybe we could come out of hiding. ;)

I play with 3 female players everynight 8) (in left 4 dead, not what your thinking lol) but yeah theyr very nice people and all i can say is left 4 dead is probably a better place to socialize then facebook, if you know how to talk to girls :P.

Well... I see a lot of girls playing CS Source. I've even seen female admins in CS Source. But they don't act sober :) They ban for high ping and even dare to kick the other admins...

Out of the 10-12 of us playing COD2 at lunch everyday at my job, two are actualy female. And they both kick my a$$... :D

I think gaming is very much planted in a masculine environmentinside of a geekycontext. To put it simple, its just a whole bunch of rude nerds being angry. This doesn't encourage girls to play.

1) They JUST ARN'T NICE PEOPLE. Present company excluded of course =). It's almost impossible to be new to a game, because you just get called 'noob'. Funnily enough. There are way too many gamers out there willing to pay-out poor play, and not enough gamers willing to congratulate good play. This doesn't encourage girls to play.

2)It's impossible to get help. No one really wants to help someone starting out. And on the rare occasion this happens, it isn't called 'helping'.... it's called 'carrying'.. a very poor term to use. This doesn't encourage girls to play.

3) Most games reward traditionally masculine achievements. i.e. killing, maiming, disintegrating. There are many exceptions but... This doesn't encourage girls to play.

4) Some gamers (i.e. pubescent boys) tend to react almost explosively when a girl reveals herself. Suddenly this person is no longer just another player but something they must respond to (whichever way this may be; funny, coy, abusive, sweet)... and this is just creepy. This doesn't encourage girls to play.

I know I have made extremely stereotyped and sweeping statements, but, really the more I play certain games, and e-socialise with certain groups of gamers, the more this stereotype gets exaggerated. I think it will be a fair while before games as a medium reaches equal reception and popularity amongst both genders, like say movies, booksor music(and forum discussions like these are a stark reminder). I would simply just say; not many girls play games, doesn't bother me, and if they did, wouldn't make a difference to me anyway.

I hope they exist otherwise the gaming market will never grow, develop and (God! PLEASE MAKE IT COME TRUE!) mature. But hey I don't really mind whether they are male or female, I kill (in-game, duh!) them the same and move on.

I know girls that play WoW, L4D, TF2, etc. Sure, there seem to be a lot more gals playing on consoles/handhelds than on PCs (at least with my friends), but it's not a big deal.

I'll play anything from online flash games to an FPS like Crysis. I am currently getting into Morrowind. I know I know a few years late but better late than never. I must say I already like it much more than Oblivion. I currently know a few other women that game on their pcs. We do exist.

My friend's niece (who's 19) has played CS and DoD for 5 years and still plays it endlessly today. She's cute too. I plan to marry her some day.Bumzur

machiavell8x8- Thanx for the heads up on that mod. I haven't had that much time to search for mods. Because of the games age there are thousands of mods out there to look through. Once school is over I will be on the look out for that one.

Female gamers exist! I read through this thread, and I think its more of a state of mind thing. For example, I know for one I am not the type of girl who grew up doing typically girly things :P I played sports, Sega, Pc, Playstation games, and recently got into MMO's. I know I for one am not the girl on a game to yell 'OMG I AM A GIRL GIVE ME STUFF' I actually don't tell anyone unless they figure it out. I have gotten harassed but it is easy to ignore. What I hate is that everyone thinks less of girl gamers. I am the most competitive person,a nd the moment I open my mouth in vent I can feel the amount of respect go down. people automatically think girls have no skill so thats why they hide. I literally can't pvp via arena systems unless I know the person. All in all, girl gamers do exist we just keep quiet about it. The loud girls, the ones who ask for things and demand attention, are the ones that are generally bad at games anyways. My theory is good looking girls generally keep quiet about it and are incredibly good at games where as the attentoin seeking ones are generally horrible(and unattratcive). Just a thought :D

They don't exist, never have. They are a myth, an urban legend. A figment of a delusional adolescent's imagination. I think it is about time we all accepted this truth and stop perpetuating the false conception that female PC gamers actually exist.
