I'd go with some better memory and instead of the 4870 X2, get a GX2. The 4870 X2 actually does worse than the GX2 in some games like Crysis, or is right on par with it. For the money, you could buy two GX2s and definately outpace it. But if you want to SLI them, you'd have to get another motherboard.

No thanks, I think I'll stick with with the 4870x2.

Why better memory?

No, I do not believe I'll be getting a quad. Not worth it yet.

Well hey, if you want a 4870 X2, I could sell you my brand new one that I was going to return. In any case, faster memory will of course give you better performance and allow you to overclock that E8500 more. High-end DDR2 is pretty cheap. I got 4GB of OCZ Reaper DDR2-1150 for only 60USD.

Really? Because I was told that the performance boost would be negligible if not completely unnoticable.

What could be improved?

-sigh- You know, I've been thinking of getting a Q9550, but I'm worried that come Nehalam and it'll be obsolete, not to mention that since most games don't even use quad core it'd just be a waste of money. That's why I figured I'd get the E8500, because it's good enough to give me good gaming performance and cheap enough that when Nehalem comes out or quads become more useful it can be easilly replaced. Not to mention by the time quads become heavily used in gaming they could be cheaper or superior.

I can't imagine a quad would be necessary for that.

I Haven't done tests but i am pretty sure it would affect your performance on a dual core if you had winamp and CS or idk COD4 (maybe not CS so much but you get the point) yes you could run them both but yea 4 cores are better 2 cores, even if you don't need the other 2 cores(not allways true with PC gaming lol)

Well it's just that I won't be doing any video editing or real multitasking, and most games don't even make use of quad cores (they barely make use of two as is) so I'll be paying for two cores I won't actually be using.

And like I said, come Nehalam and it might be obsolete. Not to mention by the time quads become heavily used in gaming they could be cheaper or superior.

Great build... but if you wait for i7 (nehalem)... me too, I give U an advice...

"Buy everything the best except Processor, Mobo and RAM"... Because if U buy Nehalem those components become useless...

So if plan on i7 save your money with e7200+P43Mobo+2gbDDR2...

If you do have attention to upgrade to Nehalem later then Dual-Core will set you up well but usually, when people build such rigs, they go with Quad to get the absolute performance and the 100$ difference or so isnt really much in that case

We might have to wait until DX11 for proper multi-threading :?

All that was kind of my point.

Quads aren't useful for gaming yet, and Nehalem might not be the Second Coming.

So instead of simply waiting another few months, I'll buy a quality CPU. Not the best, but good enough for good game performance and cheap enough to be easily replaced at need, eh?

-sigh again-

You know what? The Q6600 is the exact same price as the E8500. Which should I get?

The 3.16GHz Duo, or the 2.4GHz Quad? Aren't duel cores better for gaming and much easier to OC?

I'm really leaning towards the E8500 at this point.

I think I'll stick with Dual core for now. Better for gaming and easier to overclock.

Yes Duel cores are support, but the qua cores run in a duel core like mode if all 4 cant be used. In other words if the thing your running doesn't support QUAD core, the quad will perform slightly below its duel core conter part

Either way it doesn't matter because quads can still happily handle anything currently thrown at it!
