Hi

Non-magic classes are too boring, whereby I mean they have relatively few skills besides "hit for more damage." Soloing, except for the Beastmaster job, is literally impossible beyond the introductory levels. Unless you have a dedicated group of people to play with, you'll spend more time waiting to form a group than actually playing the game, which is what killed it for me more than anything else. They also have Japanese and American players on the same servers, which causes obvious language barrier issues.
Everything in the game is a ridiculous time sink, and I mean beyond simply leveling up. Even raising your fishing skill takes a ridiculous amount of time. There is so much stuff in the game where the only "challenge" to it is that it takes forever to do. It's an old-school MMORPG through and through. I actually had fun with it for a few months, but I'd be hard-pressed to recommend it in a post-WoW era. I think you should just wait for Final Fantasy XIV (the new online one they are making) or just play something else entirely. (I don't play WoW anymore either, just for the record.) Right now my MMORPG of choice is Aion. I've heard some people compare it to Dark Age of Camelot, a game which I've never played. Personally, I think it's a lot like WoW in a lot of ways, but it has its own unique twists on the genre.
It might not be your cup of tea, but EVE online has a really mature community. A lot of 30 and 40+ gamers.
I recently started up again with a friend of mine and we played for a little while, but I never got very far.. not much further than I had when the game was released, actually :) It's fun at first, and it's an interesting game compared to other MMO's, but it's pretty difficult to play on your own, it's rather unnecessarily complex at times (like many JRPG's), and it can get boring due to a few obstacles.. having to find groups, travel time, etc.
I had some fun but in the end, I just got bored of it.
The game I have had the most fun with recently is Warhammer Online. It has its issues, and there are some weird performance problems that they've been having since forever, but it's a cool game all-around. I'd recommend it especially if you're not hardcore. I'd come in and PvP for an hour and then grab my dinner, for example. Unlike FFXI where if you join a good group you're going to want to forego all other activities until it breaks up. Warhammer is easy to play on your own and PvE or very quickly and easily join PvP. Either world PvP with keeps and sieges or the scenario battles.

ok i'm a ffxi player from wayyyyyyyyyyyyy back (day one of japanese release) retired now but i would not recommend that game to any one at this point unless you love uphill battles
1. you need a team for everyyyyyyyyyyyyyy thing and it eats up lots of your time to lv get to exp spots all etc
2. end game well if you dont have a good guild your not going to see any of that stuff
3. japanese partys will all most all ways be better than all american partys (long time players can vouch for me on this)
4. combat is slow didn't really bother me to much but some people dont like it
5. i will say the game is not as hard as it used to be...it as pretty damn ruff for new players starting out when i played its better now but still i'd say try out the free try thing and see if its for you just know your in for a long road if you have to do it alone
ff11 requires alot of time and a very complex mind. i recommend guildwars as an easy entry into the genre (in fact i know someone of your age that plays it haha)

Vanguard comes to mind.
Oh, and Ultima Online for sure...Ultima Online will either be the best thing that has ever happened to you (I suppose...well, yea it's that good) or else you will be left confused thinking it's the worst game ever.
