Man, Totally different. They are with in the same realm of thoughts and ideas, but with all Final Fantasy's they very much different. I'll say one thing, I played FFXI for many years and Played FFXIV for a good year and half, that Final Fantasy MMO's are brutal. They are not your typical run of the mill MMO. They have a pretty steep learning curve and consist of a lot of grinding.
It's battle system will typically seem outdated, to most people. It does not follow the standard WoW model. It's slower paced. It's class system is superb. One character can play all classes, and as you level up higher and obtain more abilities, you can mix abilites to fit your play style.Â
FFXIV was a HOT MESS when it came out originally. I hope that this new release of it "Realm Reborn" is remastered. I'am excited to give it another go, yet not holding my breath. To enjoy this game you must like MMO's, and be ready to dedicate some time to it. If your not ready to do that, its a waste of money.     Â

I'll say this, I played many an MMO in my day as well as some JRPGs like golden sun, dragon quest IX, pokemon, tales of symphonia...
but never played through a full blown grind JRPG. Is it really a lot worse grind-wise? What makes it more appealing than say a western MMO?
I can't really talk too much about what FFXIV a realm reborn will be like, but playing the orginal FFXIV before they took the servers down I can. Your looking at 3-5 months of grinding pending on how much time you play (which is a rough estimate after they took away the fatigue system). There were not very many quests to run around and do things to gain exp, which i believe they have added in with a relam reborn, and all you did was kill monsters and monsters and more monsters for as many hours as you could take to gain a small amount of EXP. It doesn't stop there though, In Final Fantasy world your open to all classes, which in order to be a "profitable" player. That being the best word I could use, meaning you have the fexability to change your abilites around to meet the groups needs, you need to level multiple classes. So now when your looking at 3 months for leveling 1 class, your looking at that much more to get other classes at higher levels. Oh and I hadn't even begun to talk about you leveling up your crafting/gathering classes.Combat in Final Fantasy MMOs is not as free flowing and fast paced as your typically western MMO, its very hard to explain, its something you need to check out and as soon as you start to play it you will understand. The GCD's work differently.
There is a lot to learn here as well, you are able to put your stat points in manually every time you level. The game doesn't do it automatically for you, so you need to learn and play with stats to see what stats fit your play style and what stats play best with each class. On top of gearing your character out. It is a game you don't casually pick up and start running with it. Requires lots of time and knowledge and research to be a good player. I have played many MMOs myself, and these are definitely a whole different breed of game.
