Here are all the parts that I will need to buy:
mobo
cpu
vga
ram
psu
What do you think? DX10 is not important and price is a big issue. I am not sure about the mobo.
EDIT: links updated
EDIT: upgraded to 2x512MB DDR2 800

you cheaped out way to much on the ram and your PSU is some no name ****. Never ever cheap out on a power supply thats powering $1000 worth of equipment.

however the powersupply only has 1 PCI-E connector so make sure thats all your powersupply needs.

I could not agree with you more, except this PSU is only supporting about $200 worth. That RAM is pricey. I would have gone with 2GB of cheap RAM before I looked at that. What is more important, the speed or latency of RAM? Would I be better to go with DDR2 667 RAM at 4-x-x-x instead of DDR2 800 5-x-x-x?
EDIT: That psu has passive pfc. If I was spending $65 on my psu, I would get one with active pfc.
actually the latency at 5-5-5-15 and the speed doesn't make a huge difference, more or less better for overclocking. on the PSU, okay my bad, its 2:00 am and its been a long day, and I cant really comment on the mobo cause I kow nothing about it. filmography
Lol, I know what you mean.
I'd get a Antec Earthwatts 430W for $5 less than that thermaltake,i agree with filmography on the RAM,but if you're not gonna OC that X2 4000+ i'd get AT LEAST a X2 4600+ preferably a X2 5600+,but if you are gonna OC,get a BIOSTAR TF560 A2+ for $80.Indestructible2
No, I don't plan on OC. The price rises quickly as you increase the speed. How much of difference would you really notice with only 10% speed increase? It would be 45% more money for only 10% more performance - right?

Actually its closer to 30% X2 4000+ VS X2 5600+ http://xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/dualcore-roundup_4.html#sect0But if you plan on keeping it at stock, just make sure you don't play CPU-Demanding games like SupCom.

I was comparing the 4000+ and 4600+ stat wise.

IDK how well SupCom would run but no less than Medium-high settings @ 1280x1024 i would assume,i never played that game with a rig like the one your getting so i'm not for sure, but X2 4000+ VS X2 4600+,stick with the X2 4000+ in that case.Like the other guy said, stay away from that PSU. Stick with brands like Ante, Enermax, CorsAir, Thermaltake (I personally have the H2-500W PSU they make, and I am running very similar specs to yours [4600, 1950PRO, 2GB RAM])
But other then that all I can say is that your ass is going to asplode from the performance difference of this to your old rig. *looks at sig* Bleck...22Toothpicks
I know! I can't wait!
I got that PSU for the computer in my sig because the reviews were good and my sig pc is not getting enough power. It cannot handle a controller in the USB! I was wondering how that PSU woulddo in a performance machine though. I will look for another one.
How well does the 65nm X2 4000+ overclock?

X2 BE-2300's and X2 3800+'s have been know to reach 3GHz on a BIOSTAR TF560 A2+ so i would assume that X2 4000+ can reach 3GHz as well, but not all CPU's and Mobo's are created equal, some OC better, some worse,it all depends on luck IMO.I like the idea of building a system that supports future upgrades very well. This PSU looks like it would do the job.jed-at-warNEVER buy Rosewill, they are a crap company with poor quality PSU's,get that Antec Earthwatts 430W i recommended,it kills that Rosewill, even if it had OVER 9000 watts...

That one doesn't say if it has active PFC. Why is rosewill bad? The reviews seem good. It only has 2 SATA plugs, but I don't need more than one HDD anyway. If that is not it, what is so bad about that brand?

Allright, I did some research on PSU brands and looked at some mobos. I have updated my OP with my findings.jed-at-warThe 430W version of the same PSU is THE SAME DAMN price!
Everything else seems decent.
^just because he's on a budget doesn't mean he's poor, not everyone can throw away lots of money on a computer like you or me.
OH and the antec seems like a good idea, you dont need 500 watts to run this computer.
Jed, did you just call $60 for 2 gigs of ram EXPENSIVE??? Are you POOR???
imrlybord7
Lol, no. It is expensive compared to $30 - $35 for one gig. I will upgrade to 2GB, but I don't need it now.

Hehe i have a lot of catching up to do myself,my rig is 2.0GHz Pentium 4,512MB RAM and FX 5200 :P but i'll be getting a MUCH,MUCH,MUCH better one by the end of the year.Just curious though, what games you gotta catch up with?
I wish ya luck with the new build, Jed. I haven't built a miro-ATX in a while, but I can't argue with the quality/price of your MOBO choice. Since you aren't overclocking, any name brand econo-DDR2 should do the job. Although, since you're building AMD and not Intel, you should probably look for a reasonably priced DDR2 800 stick...like this one...
Patriot 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $37.99
Something to consider, since it's less than 10 bucks more than the stick of DDR2 667 you listed. In dual channel, 667Mhz per stick isn't so bad, but it'll choke your data throughput in single channel...:| In fact, were I building your system, I might get two sticks of 512MB RAM, to run them in dual channel. You could always add a couple 1GB sticks later and have 3GB in dual channel.;)
A-DATA 1GB (2x512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $39.99
WINTEC AMPX 1GB (2x512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $39.99
I'm not familiar with these brands, but they seemed to get good reviews. The addition of heat spreaders was also nice. :)

Well, all I have played is some GCN and Xbox games. I want to play the KOTOR series on the pc, jedi academy, jedi outcast on the pc, empire at war, and republic commando on pc. Beyond that, I have not really looked at what's on PC.
(What did you expect - look at my name. ;))
All three of my GCNs have broke, and the last of two Xboxes is dying. I just decided that I'm going PC instead of console. If you know of any non-M games, feel free to suggest them.

Duel channel makes sense. I like your idea. I will get two duel channel 512MB sticks and upgrade with 2GB duel channel. Thanks.
Rome: Total War is not rated M,i love that game, try it out, once you get new rig of course, your current one would barely run it.
And A-DATA and WINTEC? you should NEVER cheap out on RAM,get QUALITY stuff like CORSAIR,OCZ,G.SKILL,Crucial,Mushkin and Patriot.
Change it to 2gb ram and a 1950 pro and u have a great PC.wooz101
That would be well over $100 more.
