It's fun, but it's very repetitive. It's like an FPS GTA. Driver there, kill him, collect this nonsense, kill him, drive here, kill him, etc, etc. Plus the death animations and AI were sucky. Also I hated the car driving with it's low top speed. Everytime some jerks chase you down even though you drive the same car, and having to deal with them evertime you cross a checkpoint got annoying real fast.

I loved Far Cry 2.

It's what I refer to as an atmosphere game. It's not so much about the missions as it is about 'getting' to the missions - or just hanging out, or wandering around. If wandering along down near a river bank at sunset, while hearing soldiers walking about on a bridge above you, doesn't send a shiver down your spine, or if creeping through the savannah and slowly moving towards your prey to make a headshot from afar doesn't thrill you... or if you just aren't in awe of the two African towns in the game, or any one of the many cool locations... then you're just not going to like the game.

It's completely about the atmosphere.

Personally, I love it. Far Cry 2 unlocks my imagination, and makes me feel like I really am a mercenary in Africa. That's why I like games so much. They allow me to become a different person. When I've got this game on I feel like Africa is right there inside my monitor. Here's a cool thing to do: play the game on a really, really hot afternoon. The atmosphere factor doubles.

Yes it's got great atmosphere, and I really like it's theme on wars fueled by resources (diamonds in this case) and the involvement of mercenaries. I love the French woman who can become one of your buddies named Michelle. She was all anti-merc, and I love that about her, she felt like she had a real purpose to the setting. I just wish the game wasn't built so much towards what the console could do, otherwise I think the game could've been designed more vastly, with larger towns, a larger playable area that wasn't designed to be a giant square, and I wish there was more wildlife, especially of the dangerous kind. Having to watch out for lions, cheetahs, leopards, crocodiles, hippos, as well as water buffalo and elephants would've been really interesting from a survival standpoint.

:o You're right! The key to enjoying things is simply to lower your expectations. I hadn't thought I could enjoy watching Transformers 2 at all, but when I compared it with swallowing razor blades or being gang raped by skinheads, it suddenly seemed a delightful idea. :P

Sarcasm aside, I never played Far Cry 2, and it's quite possible that the reason a lot of people were getting annoyed with it is that they were approaching the game in the same way as they had played Crysis. Still, from what I 've heard, the problems with this game weren't merely in the beholders' eyes, but had a lot to do with sloppy design and testing. Maybe after serious patching, this could turn out to be a great game, but it shouldn't be down to the modding community to sort out the results of a rushed title.

This.

But it's still a bit half-assed.

I hope Far Cry 3 returns to the science fiction roots of the series, but keeps the basic design of FC2. They should ditch their ambition to make it a pure shooter, just copy the Stalker RPG system and it's OK.

As for the setting, I still want Africa. Mixed with 2012.

I played Far Cry 2 on the 360. I loved it. Great game. I got the PC version free with my processor. I might install it later or I might just install Far Cry instead. I've wanted to play it since its 2004 release.

Farcry 2 = practically invisible enemies hitting you with 99% accuracy that respawn and are present at every checkpoint. No thank you. I perfer to fight enemies that somewhat resemble human beings.

Sorry m8, but that is a consumer's worst nightmare. Having to lower one's expectations, for products that we pay top dollar for is a recipe for disaster. I can see it now, games with the quality of say for instance Big Rigs, being priced at $50, then reading the developer's replies about complaints, stating how it's the consumers' fault, how we need to lower our expectations. I just hope that there isn't any game developers reading this thread.

Real life simulator, ROFL, funniest thing I heard today, the atmosphere was OK, still, you cannot get by on just atmosphere, other games do Atmosphere better (Stalker). It is an average at best game no matter how you convince yourself otherwise.

when i first got this game i was so angry about UB soft because they are my favorite company (they made POP worrier within , you know) , but farCry 2 completly sucked ! i literally played the first level or what ever , then tried the level editor , and thats it !, the game was on its way to the trash ! and i threw the DVD on the shelf

and basically when i updated my PC so i can play the most modern games i was so hyped up that i wanted games able to give me the most out of the mony that i payed , and that's what crysis did ! , and a slow games like assassins creed and farCry 2 was absolutely not my thing , that's why i didn't like farCry 2

One of the best first person shooters out there.

I enjoy Far Cry 2 much more than Crysis, and a LOT more than Halo. It's better than L4D, it's better than Fear2, it's better than Cryostasis - the list goes on and on.

i got this game with my xfx gtx 260 for free. i never bothered to install it or even open the game. Its so boring i first bought it on 360 when it was released. i hated the repeatitive mission soooo much and the Ridiculious AI with their 100% accuracy from 1 miles away with an ak47. the only good thing is the visual aspect.

they resemble human beings more than crysis, that the ai feels weird... so yeah for me its better than crysis, i really dont get tht accuracy thing, that happens in all games..even in the so called reallistic arma, atleast in crysis you are pretty damn accurate too.

in order for you to enjoy this game you need to cool down and not expect too much out of the game , the most important thing is to lower your expectations

split-moment

despite this being quite funny i think the reason i loathe this game so much is because of how high my expectations were for it. i was waiting for it for a long, long time, was anticipating something really special with the africa setting and was hoping it would live up to the original far cry which i loved.

but then i got the game and was devastated to find one wtf moment after another. how did he spot me from so far away? why cant i go prone and use stealth? why is every single person trying to kill me? why did those guards respawn as soon as the guard post moved off and then back on screen? why is there no fast travel system? why do i have malaria (jack carver was far too cool to have to deal with this s***)? why is no-one warring (except against me) in this so called warzone? why are my guns constantly jammimg? why are all these missions very, very similar?

i just couldnt have fun with it or soak up the atmosphere people are talking about because of these things, despite several re-attempts to like it. its reduced me to being a very bitter man

This guy gets it.

The pacing of Far Cry 2 can put some people off. I had more fun playing it slower, taking in the scenery, moving on foot, exploring the map etc. I guess I really like the scenery and setting of the game.

You have to have a bit of an imagination to enjoy this game, I can understand how it wouldn't interest you if you just went along doing the main missions, trying to drive through multiple check points and get through it as fast as you can. I got a lot of enjoyment out of approaching situations or enemy camps in different ways each time and trying different weapon setups. There are several different load-outs you can try:

  • Brute strength (MAC-10+grenade launcher)
  • Stealth (Dart gun, silenced mp5, silenced pistol)
  • Arsonist (Flamethrower, flare gun, molotovs)

Of course you have other weapons like the IEDs and mortar that provide even more options.

I agree that there are many problems with the game and it's certainly not as good as it could have been but it's not the worst game ever imo.

The incredible atmosphere is ruined by extremely poor AI, repetitive missions, unrealistic weapon damage, and the fact that 90% of the map is impassable terrain.

I actually honest-to-ceiling-cat really enjoyed this game. The appeal of finally bringing a TRUE open world (Far Cry/Crysis were ALMOST there, but just shy of the mark) to shooter-dom, how beautiful the flora and game world was, even how the whole idea of notoreity and the weapon purchasing just made me fall for that game. Then again, I was so hyped up on that game before it came out that I beat it in a weekend (and a month later, another weekend). Nevertheless, I'll still tinker around in it when I'm bored to this day.
