Being that the series was very short and there was only one movie, yeah it could work. Not too many worries about screwing with the backstory because much of the backstory is still undefined.
Â
So ya, it can work.Â
There simply isn't enough background information to make a MMO out of it right now, but with some work, it might be something like a Freelancer MMO.yian
Â
I disagree with that, EQ had no back story when it came out and was once the top of the heap, so successful that WoW copied it's basic style (except for the Diablo 2 advancement system). SWG and DDO had plenty of backstory and they became abominations
Â
I think it comes down to how talented the Devs are and how much they respect the Firefly series.Â
Unforunatly, I think that this is a horrible idea... unless it sparks a come back for the show. But I wouldn't hold my breath.singsorrow
If it brought the show back, i wouldnt care if it was the worst pc game ever madeÂ
The overall enviroment is nothing more than a (and yes it's been said before, but I'll dare to repeat it) a rather generic Star Trek type of universe.  kodaiYou seriously comparing the Firefly universe to the Star Trek universe?!
I don't have a lot of faith in the company putting the game out or in the engine they are using for it. I really hope it will be good but I have my doubts.
Anyhow, I would love to see a Firefly MMORPG if it was done correctly.

Sorry man but the firefly universe is nothing like the Star Trek universe. And who are these people that have said it is?!
The Star Trek universe consisted of Humans and aliens in the Federation and whole other alien races in their own empires. It consisted of a LOT of ships (almost everyone) having some sort of firepower. Also in the ST universe FTL travel was common, and technology was very advanced.
In contrast, the firefly universe consisted of only humans. Yes, Reevers were "monster like" creatures but as we all know after watching the movie, they were still just altered humans. There were NO alien races. It was not common that most ships had some sort of firepower and technology, compared to Star Trek, was not nearly as advanced. Also, Star Trek had a "polished" atmosphere to it whereas firefly had a very "unpolished" (purposefully done to have some "old west" feel to it) atmosphere. I would say Firefly's "atmo" was more like the Bladerunner "atmo" than Star Trek.
So, imho, the 2 are quite "opposite." Sorry man, not to argue but I totally disagree with you on that one.
As for them making a firefly game. Hey, if they make a GOOD space MMO out of it, I don't care "what" show they base it on (even though I'm a HUGE fan of both Firefly and Star Trek). There are very few "good" MMOs out right now and the space game genre is wide open for a few "good" games.
So, whether it's a Firefly game (MMO or not), Star Trek, or any other show for that matter, if it's a GOOD game with GOOD multiplayer....I'm in. :D

At no point did I compare Firefly to Star Trek. I merley stated that the universe it was set in is rather gneric and I gave Star Trek as an example. Read my comment that you quoted again. The science that governs the universe is rather bland, and there is no real depth to it. Neither the show nor movie really cover any real details of how the government functions. In fact, the show tries to only show the "rim" worlds that dont really try to follow federation law to a T. My point in that comparison is Star Trek does pretty much the same thing and thats one of the more boring aspects of it. In now ay am I downplaying Firefly. I'm merly pointing out that MMO's are heavly based on enviroment and Firefly has always been a character piece show. That being the case I think that there is a very good chance that this game will alienate it's core audiance and that could very well in turn doom the game. I'm not saying they shouldnt make the game. I'm just giving my reasons as to why I think the game just might fail. I would love to see a hit sci-fi MMO as I'm sick to death of fantasy, and what better show than Firefly. I just think there are more cons involved with the concept than most fans are thinking about. So please dont accuse me of faulty compairsons where I made none.[QUOTE="1Lonehawk"][QUOTE="kodai"] The overall enviroment is nothing more than a (and yes it's been said before, but I'll dare to repeat it) a rather generic Star Trek type of universe. kodai

I simply stated that I disagreed with you saying that the Firefly universe was like the Star Trek universe. I did not name your camparison as "faulty" either. Please read "my" post that you quoted again.
Please don't be offended by my correction. Just want to clarify that I merely disagreed with you that's all. Never accused you of anything or found fault anywhere in your post. :)
Firefly as a Sci-Fi franchise just doesn't seem all that conducive to an MMO. After all, the show was driven by its characters far more than it's universe. The Firefly universe itself wasn't even all that spectacular--don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan, but in all truth, it was a fairly standard sci-fi setting. The show was so great because of the characters that populated it and the chemistry between them. None of this would be possible to capture in a MMO.
Â
In my opinion, a single player RPG with a good story and all the original cast members would make a lot more sense. Think Knights of the Old Republic.
Â
Franchises with a massive, unique universe make good mmo's. (-ahem- Dune...) Even with all its greatness, Firefly wasn't one of these. Â
