I wanted my first PC to be compact and cheap while still having some gaming capabilities (also progams for Engineering/Schoolwork stuff)

My initial goal was to have it under $650, but I forgot about the government rebate check... so I decided to give myself an extra 100 or so in budget

Vista Home Premium 64bit

Silverstone Silver Micro ATX (name is Sugo?)

AMD Phenom 9950 2.6ghz quad core

Nvidia 9800gt 512mb

Antec PSU 550W

Lite on CD/DVD drive

640gb Western Digital HDD

4GB 1066mhz ram

How good is it? after taxes and mail in rebates it should come out in the 700 dollar range

I'd personally get the Phenom X3 720 BE. It's a bit more expensive, but it can be overclocked way better that that X4. Also, I'd go for the Radeon HD4850 instead of the 9800GT, the price is about the same, but the Radeon is better.

The Silverstone Sugo isn't the greatest choice as far as cases go - a standard ATX mid-tower would be better, something like the Antec Three Hundred if you're on a budget. The original Phenom series is pretty much a bust, go for Phenom II or get an Intel setup. I'd lean more towards Phenom II on your budget though. The 9800GT isn't a bad card, but it is outclassed by the HD4830 for the same price. The PhysX support might come in handy though, so it might be nice to have around to use as a dedicated PhysX card in the future. And that's not a whole computer yet - what kind of motherboard are you going to be using?

Pretty good build.. i just built my first computer too :D.. In the future you might want to upgrade your graphics card and you would need a bigger psu as well. =]

Yeah the Motherboard has a really long name but it is a ASR motherboard supporting the phenom quad core series with 8 memory slots (1066 DDR2) and it is microATX, but as far as processor goes.... should I go with the Q8200 or Q8400 then?

the 9950 u choose is pretty good right now, not as strong as intel ones but it can stand up for most games today (i own one myself). If u want to go for q8200 or q8400 then u will have to choose a motherboard that support intel processor. BTW im not suggesting you buy a micro atx case. Buy some nice mid-tower atx case if you want to overclock and have good cooling.
