What was the first online FPS that REALLY got you hooked?

For me it was Quake1, the gameplay was wicked, the atmosphere was fantastic and it was just a real blast online that game.

I still remember the day it came out and spending all night with a friend rocking deathmatch till 4am, good times :P

Since then though no other deathmatch type online FPS have got me that hooked, mainly like more teambased/objective based shooters now, but I tell ya, that Quake 1 sure was a beauty for onlien FPS action when it first came out :P

For some reason Quake 1 was also the last Deathmatch oriented online FPS that I really fell in love with, now a days I prefer teambased/objective based onlien FPS to death match ones, but I cant front.. Quake 1 had me hooked for a good long time :P

So what about all you? What online FPS game did you really really enjoy?

Counter Strike (The very first version). I remember playing countless hours late at night despite the pay per minute connection I used to have.

Dark Forces. :)

I know it's a Doom clone but we didn't even have Doom and when we did have it I could care less because this game was a whole lot better in my young little mind.

For me it was Quake 2, while I did play Quake 1, the pacing, weapons and maps just did not appeal to me.

Quake 2s map designs, weapons, and overall change in pasing, and movement, had me hooked instantly.

Heck I prefer Quake 2 over quake 3 BY FAR still.

I have a feeling most people answering this topic will go with an id title, or maybe the old Unreal titles (Epics Unreal would be my end choice)

Quake 3. I played the single player to death until I moved to a city with a fast enough connection to play online. Now I'm totally addicted to Quake Live, so not much has changed. Worst of all, the Quakecon tournaments are streaming throughout one of the hottest weekends we've had this year, so I'm almost literally glued to my leather chair until it's all over.

Allied Assault. I remember having no responsibilities as a kid, just coming home after school and playing for hours on end. Then I lent the CD/CD key to all of my friends and we played online multiplayer together :P. I think AA replaced what would have been my Counter Strike era, when all my friends were playing it.

I still think EA should pull its head out of its ass and issue a remaster/remake of AA as a standalone multiplayer game.

CS 1.6, waaay back in elementary and middle school, every day in the lan cafe. UT2k4 too, but DotA and L2 quickly rose in popularity in lan cafe communities here, and they overshadowed FPS games, so up till BFBC2 I hadn't played online FPS in years.

Still no other game like it. BF3 will be BF's rightful return to the online FPS throne.

America's Army : Special Forces. I played the hell out of that game. SF_KiLLaMaN

Hell yeah. I played from around 1.7 all the way till 2.85. Even downloaded it again 2 weeks ago to play it again. It blew my mind that it wasnt just about running around and shooting. I actually had to think, and the best way to rack up the kills wasnt even being a better shot, but outsmarting the enemy, the rushes, etc. Ahh.... I wish there were more games like that. Best thing was it was all free. Spent money on the battlefields, call of dutys, and counterstrikes, but they didnt keep me immersed like AAO did. I know a lot of people are into arma, while arma is pretty cool, I really miss the close quarters combat of americas army, as well as the mid range maps, such as bridge crossing, weapons cache, SF hospital, border, FLS assault, etc.

Man, even on a map like Bridge Crossing it feels like so much thought went into the map design, such as Assault starts futher away from the bridge, so they cant rush fast, but they get 1 m203, and defense starts closer, so they can rush up and defend faster, but have to watch out for that 203. Really miss that. Too bad 3.0 is a clunky piece of crap.

Yeah, AA3 is a joke. America's Army 2 found the perfect way to combine realistic play with arcade play. The game also involved more tactics than any other online shooter I have ever played. It is still to this day the only Online FPS that has ever held my interest for more than a month or 2. I hope BF3 will change that.

Tribes. Wasn't like anything else I'd played, absolutely amazing game. Can't ever forget the thrills of breaking into the enemies base, and escaping with their flag - and having your team pick you up in a transport and defend you against perusers. No other game has nailed it.

COD1 - That game was amazing, then UO expansion came out and it was still amazing, then COD2 came out still great. Then it went downhill from there.

Counter Strike Source though gets a mention as it gave me hours of entertainment playing the Zombie mode.

I didnt get internet until the late '90s, and I loved playing Team Fortress Classic on my 36.6k modem :D Sniping was so much fun, that red laser dot would lag behind your crosshairs and you had to "lasso" it onto someones head...that took skill.
