I'm going to give building my first PC a shot soon, and I think I've got the parts mostly picked out.  I've got about $2000 to spend, and this should come pretty close (I do have a little 'wiggle room' if I need to).  Is this rig a) going to run newer stuff (Obilvion, FEAR, etc) well, and b) not too complex for a first timer?

Here's the specs;

Case: Antech Performance One P180

CPU: Core 2 Duo E6600

MoBo:  Asus p5N32-sli

RAM:  Kingston HyperX P2 6400 (2x1gb)

Video: Nvidia 8800 GTX

Sound: Creative X-Fi

DVD: Probably a Samsung Writemaster (for LightScribe, I think it's cool)

HDD: 2x250 gb in raid 0, not sure exactly which ones

PSU: Thermaltake 750W

Mouse: Razer Diamondback

Keyboard: Logitech g15

Monitor: Dell 22in HD widescreen (may add later, depends on total price beforehand)

Finally, is there a better site for parts than newegg?  I can't find one.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Okay, firstly it looks like another bragging thread.  You're first question is one that you already know the answer too, especially considering you've managed to just randomly pick some of the best components available.  So don't ask questions such as "will my $2000 PC run new games well?"  As for your second question, no it isn't too complicated/hard.  Quite simple in fact, even for a "first time builder".

lol well you've picked the best graphics card out atm so its obviously going to run those games. i suggests reading as many guides as you can and watching people build rigs on youtube. type 3D gameman i think he shows how to build computers.

Actually, I'm not bragging.  I found a similar build on another site, and made a few tweaks (mostly the case, and I left out some cosmetic stuff).  I figured it would run well, but the other guy didn't test it (or at least, didn't post the test results) so I just wanted an opinion from other people here.

I knew it was a good card, but with the multitude of configurations and combinations out there, I just wanted to make sure that it was indeed a pretty good setup, and that no one that knew what they were talking about saw any glaring errors.

Thanks for your input so far, I think I'm going to go ahead and start ordering the parts.  I take it I'm pretty safe in betting that newegg is going to have the best prices?

Yes newegg will have the best prices in the u.s. for 95% of their computer parts. But I would look around online before I bought my monitor from them. If there is one thing that newegg isn't the cheapest online it's monitors and tvs.

that case is really cramped and really hard to manage your cables, and sometimes your mobo power won't reach your mobo because it's too short

Zipzoomfly.com often matches the price or beats neweggs, plus they have free ground shipping and very cheap 2-day shipping if you need something fast. I've read a lot of bad reviews from them lately but I've never had a problem with their service. Newegg is great too though, can't go wrong with them.

actually, i changed the case, the ram, the OS, and all the cosmetics. I'm also not getting the exact same psu. So no, it's not a direct copy, but yes, I did get a lot of the components there (I said I got the build from another site). Also, he had LOTS of help putting it together from experienced people, whereas I will not. That's one of the main reasons I posted here asking about it. Finally, regarding the case size, I'm confused as to why people are saying it will be too small. From every review I've read, the fact that it's got 'lots of space', and 'it's almost too big' seemed to be the consensus. So is it too big, or too small? I don't want to get all these parts and then not be able to fit them inside.

thats gonna be an awsome comp! but get a different mobo, that mobo is bad news! u should aim at the p5b dh deluxe if u want ultimate performance and overclocking abilitys...that mobo is limited when overclocking, and has really buggy bios, and the big thing on that board is that it overheats horribly bad, if u get it, youll regret it!...

Even though I've heard good things and have even seen setups like the one I'm planning to get, I'm still undecided if I want the P180 or not. The PSU being on the bottom really gets to me. I'm also looking at a COOLERMASTER stacker.. that one with 9 120mm case fans.

reading over previous comments about the PSU, it seems like u may have a problem there....but i only skimmed...
but i've just ordered a Vortec 600W ATX psu, and i figure that'll work pretty well, even if it doesn't supply as much power as your 750W

uhhhhh, yeah the power supply is overkill...there is such a thing.  spending more for less watts is far more smart and reliable than spending less for more watts...you have to watch what you buy, power supply quality is very important.  save yourself some cash and buy a 600 watt power supply...thats more than enough for the system.  its not a complex system...every pc is composed of similar parts, so once you build your first pc, youll know what you're doing.  it doesnt take an expert to build a pc.  google some building tutorials if you're having trouble, there are plenty of detailed free ones that are very helpful.  the systen will run new games just fine.

There is NOTHING wrong with that case whatsover.  It isn't too small and cramped, that is coming from people who don't even have the case.  I have it and there is no space issue whatsoever.

Well a 750watt CPU would be great if in the future he was planning the SLI the 8800GTX with another card. But your right for now the 600 watt would be fine. I would get the 750 watt one though. Because later down the road when 8800gtx's are dirt cheap you can pick up a second.

I have a similar setup. It does all the current games on high perfectly. I imagine you're would do a bit better due to your RAID setup. But so far so good and you should be happy for 2-3 years. Good investment.

Yeah, eventually I'd like to pick up a second card and run it in sli, would a 600W PSU be able to handle that, or should I bite the bullet now and get a 750W?

Even a 750w PSU is cutting it close for 8800GTX SLI. It'll run, but you'll be stressing your PSU during games. I recommend getting Patriot RAM. Tomshardware did a memory test, and it turns out that Patriots won when it came to price/performance. Other than that you're really looking good. Oh, and if you don't have a decent set of 5.1 speakers, then there isn't much point in buying the X-Fi. :/ BTW--Did you remember to buy Windows?

good point, i mean...just make sure you invest in a good one if you are going to get a 750 watt. also keep in mind dx10 cards are supposed to become more efficient (with power).

I thought the Antec TruePower were supposed to be pretty good psu's.  The one I listed got good reviews on Newegg, but it seems a lot of people here don't agree.  I'll check out some of the suggested ones before buying.

Ok.  So after reading everyone's comments, and researching a ton, I've changed most of the original build :)

Here's the new specs:

Case:  XION Onyx XON-33

Mobo:  Asus p5n32-e sli lga 755 (680i)

PSU:  Thermaltake Toughpower 750w (for second card later)

CPU: Core 2 Duo E6600

RAM:  Patriot eXtreme Performance 2x1gb PC2 6400

Graphics Card:  Geforce 8800 GTX

Sound:  Creative X-fi xtremegamer Fatal1ty Pro series

HDD: 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 320gb (oem, this kina scares me since I don't know settings already, but I figure I can find them on the internet)

DVD:  Lite-on 20x DVD +/-R with Litescribe

Keyboard:  Saitek Eclipse PZ30AU

Mouse:  Logitech G5

Monitor:  Samsung 204BW 20in Widescreen LCD

OS:  XP stripped from old system

Total price after rebates and sales and crap, but before shipping:  $2153.88

(all parts from newegg.  Looked at other sites, but price savings didn't beat sales and shipping savings)

Now we'll see just how badly I screwed the pooch when I started messing with parts I know worked...  :P

Thanks again to all of you for helping me out, I appreciate all the advice.

You're wrong.  The 8800GTX Running in SLI is more than capable of being run on a 550w PSU (of decent quality).  If you have a decent 750w PSU you wouldn't have a problem in the word running two 8800 cards, GTX or not.  A quality 550w unit would not be overly stressed running those cards in SLI.  I'll find you guys some links to show you.

I wouldn't go with asus if I were you.  Just check out the forums on their site and you'll see nothing but unanswered problems.  I hate that company.  Go Evga.  Lifetime warranty and they cover OC damages.  Just better for you.

Oh, and if you don't have a decent set of 5.1 speakers, then there isn't much point in buying the X-Fi. :/ BTW--Did you remember to buy Windows?raynimrod

I'll find you guys some links to show you.

sorry, can't find the 550 link, but here's the corsair 620hx doing all that jazz ( 8800 gtx sli):

the 520hx should be able to accomodate just the same. 40A on the 12v rail is yummy.

SLI-certified = hype.

The corsair 620hx is "certified" to work up to the 7900 GTX sli and under   yeah.. rite.

I look forward to those links.

Good luck running 8800GTX SLI on a 550w PSU (no matter what make) for more than a year. You're putting a huge stress on the PSU's 12V rails, and there's no way you can deny that. Even then, there's the matter of having enough amperage on the 12V rails to even run the two GTXs.

Just because Corsair used a 620w PSU to run 8800GTX SLI at a trades convention, it doesn't mean that you should do the exact same for your rig.

Ok. So after reading everyone's comments, and researching a ton, I've changed most of the original build :)

Here's the new specs:

Case: XION Onyx XON-33

Mobo: Asus p5n32-e sli lga 755 (680i)

PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 750w (for second card later)

CPU: Core 2 Duo E6600

RAM: Patriot eXtreme Performance 2x1gb PC2 6400

Graphics Card: Geforce 8800 GTX

Sound: Creative X-fi xtremegamer Fatal1ty Pro series

HDD: 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 320gb (oem, this kina scares me since I don't know settings already, but I figure I can find them on the internet)

DVD: Lite-on 20x DVD +/-R with Litescribe

Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse PZ30AU

Mouse: Logitech G5

Monitor: Samsung 204BW 20in Widescreen LCD

OS: XP stripped from old system

Total price after rebates and sales and crap, but before shipping: $2153.88

(all parts from newegg. Looked at other sites, but price savings didn't beat sales and shipping savings)

Now we'll see just how badly I screwed the pooch when I started messing with parts I know worked... :P

Thanks again to all of you for helping me out, I appreciate all the advice.

Try lowering that sound card to maybe Xtreme Music/Game level, so that you can have a 22" monitor--The GTX doesn't start sweating until you hit 24" levels.
