I don't have a pc but I want to build one. I'll begin with budget parts and upgrade to more expensive parts once I have the money later. Trinity just came out so I thought it would be a smart way to go. But from what I gather, there won't be any worthwhile upgrades from the trinity line in the near future. And from what I read online the A10 falls roughly 20-30fps behind an i5 CPU in most cases. That only leaves the ominous Kaveri due out in 2013 but who knows if that will be much better. So my question is, will Kaveri be compatible with the FM2 socket if I end up upgrading the trinity cpu?

if you were to get an a10 or a8 series trinity apu in reality there is nothing you cant max out. especially once you consider resolutions.

you see tc as the resolution goes up the cpu stress in games goes down.

if we take the above statement and bring it to the real world we see that the a10 actually does basiclly the same job as the 3930x for example @ resolutions above 1680 x 1200. which is why no cpu game benchmark is done at anything above 1080p as once you hit the 1080p wall the difference is more liek 3-5fps in 90% of games and the other 10% consists of rts's and mmo's where the fps difference is so radical yes but the fps count for any of the cpu's you can test is obscenely high as neither genre is particularly hardware demanding (at least right now anyway).

so.. as a rule of thumb here is how i would play it out:

~$100 to spend on the cpu: get a phenom II x4 or x6

~$140 to spend on the cpu: get an a1-5800k or phenom II x6 (1090t or 1100t)

~$200 to spend on the cpu: get a core i5 2310

anything above this is atm all intel turf (for now, we cant predict the future after all)

and if your curious about what other genres could theoretically all be ran on.. atm it sits at the core 2 quad q8500 or athlon II x4 640 or better (in short, dirt fing cheap)

anyone who tells you different.. can take an fing hike cause its 2013 soon and its downright sad if their still gaming on a 2 core cpu like a chump.

so in reality.. tc your right.. but only until the resolution standards move up to 1080p as the norm.

edit: forgot to bury a land mine for an unsuspecting fanboy:

The great part about the 5800k is that you don't need a video card and you will still get good performance.

Thank you Ionus. I've learned a surprising amount from your post. It seems to me that in most cases when a CPU actually improves gaming performance significantly the resolution has to be set under 1080p. If thats the case than does that mean pairiing any high quality GPU with the A10 is going to yield similar gaming performance when compared the same GPU paired with a more expensice CPU @1080p?Not including that 10% of the games you mentioned of course.

booyaaaa score 1 for me

in fact sometimes TC there is no difference in metro 2033 for ex. @ 1080p preformance is 100% identical before and after any overclocking you wish to do to them. the reason is that the cpu stressful tasks have all been moved to the more powerful graphics core(s)

Based on the minimal FM1 vs FM2 CPU performance change, it doesn't seem likely that FM2 CPU's of the near future are going to be much more powerful than an A10 5800k. Am I wrong?? What could one truely expect from it after FM1's miserable outing..? Well based on the assumption that AM3+ will continue to be utilized (Rightt??) i think ill be going with a backwards compatible phenom 2 X4 now, an AM3+ mobo, and be ready for an update in 2013. That way I save money now buying budget parts and upgrading down the road without having to worry about mobo (lol i hope). I mean it wouldn't be bad to go intel now, but I'd be left out of Haswell because of the new mobo socket in a year. At least I'd have something to get excited about with AMD... How depressing

basically what they will do is when ddr4 rolls around n 2013 they will slay backwards compatibility with am3 cpu's. am3+ has a long life ahead of it, steamroller uses am3+, the new chipsets are 1090X and 1090FX and are basically Z77 on steroids (based on what we know about them).

as for FM2 it doesnt have a long shelf life after the next APU lineup (which will be fm2 as well) fm2 will be revised to fm2+ for kabini
