8gb is optimum while 12gb is overkill.

Yes, but depending on what other applications you have open at the same time it might not be enough. I would recommend 6-8Gb if you plan on multitasking while gaming. Memory is really cheap right now so it never hurts to get more than not have enough.

I wouldn't say 8GB is overkill. I'd say it's the right amount - not too much and far from too little.

I have 8GB and it's still very roomy. I game and have my web browser open as well as always having steam and trillian running with chat windows actively being used in the respawn time in games :P. 8GB is still just cruising along.

Even if 8GB would be overkill (which I don't agree with, I think it's optimal since I don't want to worry about what I run in the background), I don't see any point in NOT getting 8GB in a new build since memory is so cheap...unless you're on a really tight budget.

8 GB is the new norm. 4GB is the new min. 12-16GB is the new power user. Any new system should consider 8GB. If your using an older system and you been gaming and what not just fine... then your better off sticking to what you have. I use 8GB and I can tell you that I notice some things that are better from 4GB. One is that games can cache data into the RAM leading to faster loads. You can turn off page file... And multitasking is better. Base your choice on how you use your PC.

In alot of cases no... It will not void your warranty. The big thing is... How many slots you will get for memory. If you get 2 and your at 4GB... Then you would have to buy 2 x 4GB sticks. Another thing is to check what the supported max of installed RAM you can use in your laptop.

For a laptop 8GB is a must due to the fact that they usually have slower hard drives to save on heat and power. get your laptop with 8GB and disable the pagefile. that way there will be no buffering to the HDD and it will help speed up your system some.

I'd get 8 since it's so cheap now. I've seen both Crysis and GTA use about 2GB by themselves.

4GB is the minimum nowadays, 8GB is the new standard, and 16GB is just ridiculously overkill for a gaming PC.. 16GB is only useful for work and servers nowadays...

I only use 3gb and I'm fine with games always have at least an extra 500mb of free ram when playing games and this is on vista with alot of programs running in the background (Things like fraps, steam, Xfire, etc I don't edit videos or something intensive like that while playing) all you need is 4gb and you'll have more then enough ram for modern games.

I have both those games and on my Logitech LCD the RAM is barely over 2.5GB on the whole system, thats including the around 1.5GB Windows 7 uses on average. Never seen those games use much over 1GB never mind 2GB at max settings...

Point is 8GB in most cases I've seen is about $10 more than 4GB. Why be cheap?

Masenkoe

4gb ram is $25 and 8gb ram is $50

But that's beside the point. The point is that it doesn't matter. The claim that Crysis and GTA4 used 2GB ram is a load of dung. I've played them both perfectly on 3GB ram. I only had to upgrade to 3.5GB for The Witcher 2 - now that game used up to 1.7GB.

This.

Newegg had g.skill sniper 8gb 1600 for $34 shipped as a shell shocker last week. I picked up a set to go up to 16gb.

With chrome with 20-30 tabs, IE with 20 tabs, steam, origin, fraps, utorrent, core temp, afterburner, my minecraft server, minecraft mininized, playing BF3, and streams going an another monitor I was pushing 7gb used. So it just depends on what you do. To say more than 4gb is overkill isn't always the case...

My rig is using 2 gigs right now with just 3 tabs in firefox open.

I'd never go below 8 in a new rig, you can never have enough RAM even if you can game just fine with 4.

I still consider 6 the absolute minimum.

I ran Crysis on a PC with 8GB of Ram on high settings. On the final level with the boss and the ship Crysis was using 2GB of ram (According to r_displayinfo 1).

Do you really I think I'd bother lying?

Also when I ran GTAIV on 4GB the system was using about 90% of the ram.

Nope,it won't,unless you are using 64 bit OS. Hell,in a 32-bit OS,with a 512mb Gpu,a system refuses to use even 4gb of Ram!
