for those with monitors that have 1920x1080 native resolution

as far as visual quality goes,

if you use 1280x720 resolution, but crank up the settings to high and maybe add 2x AA, is it better than the alternative,

which is using 1920x1080 resolution for the extra crispness and sharpness but play on medium with no AA (not that you need it since its at native resolution)

what are your thoughts on the two settings, they both lose and gain some but maintain the same aspect ratio of HD 16:9, which is better overall.

lets use crysis for example, 720 with higher settings vs 1080 with lower settings for the same framerate.

I personally prefer using the native resolution with lower settings.

is 720 really that bad to you guys?

most console games use 720 with AA, even ME2, and they don't look all that bad

Resolution makes the image clearer with less jagged edges, if you have very high with lower resolution the textures wont even look as good as they are supposed to.

If you remove the scaling you would get a nice image, but otherwise it stretches the whole screen and makes it blurry. The native resolution is always better. That's one of the reasons console games look blurry up close.

My preference would be to put it at native resolution, and adjust settings accordingly.

I argee with using native resolution. But, Crysis at 1280x768 on a 32" 720p TV doesn't look too shabby. I know it looks better than if I was playing the game on a19" monitor at 1440x900.

Medium on 1080p for sure. Upscaling and 720p in gaming in general is ugly.

Native res, yeah. It looks so blurry without your monitor's native res.

This is true and resolution is a big deal but its the first thing I scale down a bit before anything else. If I couldn't max Crysis at 1080p then I'll drop it to 720p and play it on the same settings. I'd never put the game on medium at 1080p thats just stupid. The effects are nothing too special outside of very high.

I always run my games at the native resolution, and if I can't run them at the settings I like I'll go and buy a new video card setup. Currently I play at 1920x1200 on 2 SLId GTX 480s, I'd never play at a lower resolution if the game supports 1920x1200.

running crysis with all very high settings at 720 is dumb. if anything turn all the settings down to high and up the rez to 1080. my ps3 plugged into my monitor looks laughable compared to any pc game just because the rez is so much lower.

I know I was just using those numbers for example sake. I run the game at very high at 1680x1050 actually but you get my drift. Resolution is important but once you start to get to a pretty decent res the game settings are gonna have a bigger impact on overall look of the game.

Yeah, it doesn't look very good if you're used to gaming in high resolutions. I game on consoles too, but I've been spoiled by using pcs. My eyes definitely have to readjust to the inferior graphics on consoles.

I choose high settings/720p over medium/1080p. 720p is the bare minimum for any game for me though (it happens rarely now that I have a Radeon 5850). When tweaking, it's always my start point, and if the game can handle a higher resolution, I boost it higher.

LMAO! Um how? I answered your Q I prefer my monitors native resolution like most people here, there is nothing worse than a scaled image on a LCD display IMO. I also said if I can't run at my monitors native resolution at settings I like I'd consider upgrading my hardware. Welcome to the world of PCs where you actually have that option.

I play on a 1920x1080 native resolution 24" monitor. Playing at anything less than that and the games looks absolutely horrible and stretched out. I'd rather lower my graphic settings and play at the native resolution (which I have to do quite often) rather than lower the res and pump up the graphics.

Sure Native is better, but I wouldn't recoil in fear and disgust if I had to play on 720p.

Why is it surprising? If you dont use native resolution the screen is going to look stretched. Higher resolutions are like higher settings in and of themselves. 1080p at medium is always going to look better than 720p at max. No one plays at 720 on PC anyways, except maybe on a laptop and even then it's because you dont really have a choice.

Not really. Crysis at very high 1680x1050 looks a hell of a lot better than high at 1920x1080. The lighting, post processing and shaders make the biggest difference.
