I have been using it for a while - and it is very nice. Everything good from Vista plus insane speed and smoothness. HD video (taken from my video camera) plays back very smoothly on a laptop GPU without stuttering or artifacts - it looks better than my gaming rig (see rig below). Windows media player is much better with borderless appearance and out of box HD support. Drivers are handled well and actually come up in the windows updates instead of manually finding them. ANd the POWER features for laptops. This OS uses so much less power. Time with Vista is usually about 2.5 hours, but with Windows 7, 3.5 hours on a charge.

Anyways, so far this OS is looking awesome.

That, in itself, would be a huge improvement.

You mean, if you view a folder in thumbnails one time, will it always come up in thumbnails? Let me check

I've been using the 64-bit version on my laptop. Its definitely faster, though I'm not completely sold on the new taskbar. I've always used quicklaunch toolbars and automatically congesting alike windows seems makes access slower when you're are only using a few windows. (though Its faster when handling lots of windows.)

My favourite part is it updating your drivers for you. It makes you always up to date on your drivers with just an automatic update. :P

Ah I've got new laptop few weeks ago and have Vista on it, what bothers me the most about Vista is that it keeps killing old games I like to play.

The beta ends on August 1, 2009 (well the current beta). That's when my beta key is good till. I am currently using the latest build (I think) RC 7100. It is pretty polished and I have only encountered a few errors. I can see what the guy above saying that the new toolbar isn't as good is saying. I don't mind it, and I like the pop ups, but I wish it was more visable. Sometimes I forget I already have 5 IE's up and open a new one.

They aren't technically out yet but an avid PC user may know where to look... (I'd be more helpful but don't want to risk being modded)

I had a go with the beta about a month ago, and I was very impressed... but I was forced to uninstall it as the rubbish driver support for both my sound cards at the time constantly caused it to crash, and I didn't particularly want to use it with no sound. shame really because i was enjoying using it. i'll definitely buy when it's officially released.

The only real problem I see with Windows 7 is this: Have you been using Vista? Well this isn't much different. This is vista 2.0 aka, vista clean. It is a very clean, efficient and smart form of vista. But it is vista. The jump from XP to Windows 7 will be amazing, everything the jump from XP to Vista was supposed to be. And those people will be pleased. But if you are jumping from Vista to Windows 7 - it's really not that huge of leap. But that is a minor gripe. It is what Vista was supposed to be

I've had the W7 beta for a while and now have RC1 but I still don't see any reason to upgrade over XP. Yes it's very nice looking and seems to be better than Vista but there doesn't seem to be anything on it that I can't do just as well, if not faster on XP. Also games consistently have a better fps on XP too.

For those talking about remembering folder settings:

I was looking around on XP, and i found out that by default, it was set to remember different views for 400 different folders. This is so that it doesn't waste too much memory/hard drive to remember. You can change this number though. What i'm saying is:

If you want windows to remember your folder views, it's time to upgrade Vista to XP! (yes, I am aware that vista is newer)

i've tried the beta for a while now, and i actually agree with the OP's message about going from vista to 7 isnt a huge leap and his reasoning is what i think also, its a clean, lighter, be it different version of vista, which should please most people either not using vista or had problems with vista in the past. But me I'm on vista 64-bit (which has now been out for almost 3 years and has sp1, sp2 yet to come and updates which are great improvements) and won't be changing anytime soon is the thoughts i got from using 7 for a while. My PC has everything vista needs to perform superbly with and sometimes withouit tweaking, imo, maybe not in others opinions but to each his/her own.

i'm unsure how windows 7 handles explorer folder views. people here are saying win7 saves them, but how good are they testing it? because it saved it for 5 minutes? the point of the view changing is that it changes according to what files are in the folder. so you'd have to really experiment with it to know for sure.
