almost all of the titles mentioned here have been a critical/commercial success.... they are anything but "forgotten".

Jinroh_basic

Just because a game is critically acclaimed or reached commercial success "back in the day" doesn't mean people forgot about it. You ask any gamer who started gaming during the 64 bit days isn't going to know a good majority of these games. Before Fallout 3 came around, there were people that didn't even know what Fallout 1 and 2 were. Arcanum just released on GOG and numerous people on these boards had never heard of it. While games like Deus Ex and Return to Castle Wolfenstein are hardly forgotten (the latter having just received a sequel a few months back) shogo is indeed a forgotten title by the majority of people. Just because yourself or myself remember these games, doesn't mean the typical gamer does (or better yet, even KNOW what it is). 70% of todays gamers are from the playstation age. Most of them never touched PC gaming (which most of these forgotten FPS titles come from). Unless it has Final Fantasy or Halo in the title they could care less to know it. You pick a random person on these boards and ask them "what did you think about Planescape: Torment?" I guarantee you are more likely to hear "what is that?" despite the fact that it received high critical praise.

Marathon is actually a fine example of everything I just said. Ask any halo fan what they thought about Marathon. Hell, ask a traditional PC gamer (note not a mac user) what Marathon is. See if they know.

[QUOTE="JN_Fenrir"]I would say so, especially Tribes 2. It was a well-known title, of course, but it turned many players away because it had such a steep learning curve. It's a shame Tribes: Vengeance was never polished into the product it could have been. I wonder if Section 8 (a clear spiritual successor to Tribes) is any good, or if anyone plays it. I'd also like to add C&C: Renegade to this list. The online portion of that game was utterly amazing once it was finally patched and the lag fixed. Not that anybody ever played it anyway. :P

I'm still a bit unsure about Section 8, especially since the game supposedly has this "lock-on" mechanic which boils down to a developer-sanctioned aimbot. If you run into someone with that ability ready to use and yours is still charging, you're screwed. As for Command & Conquer: Renegade, I actually do own that game and used to play it a lot. One of the maps did have a big problem, though-the Hand of Nod had a part that stuck up high enough that GDI folks would take some vehicles and pound that part from their own base until it was destroyed. Then again, on maps where you can pick up weapons that aren't part of your current character c-l-a-s-s (stupid forum software), I liked making an invisibastard Nod guy loaded up with tons of guns he shouldn't have and generally make life hell for the opponents (though I did learn that using the sniper rifle scope uncloaked just the same as shooting).

What about Magic Carpet? No seems to remember that one and it was groundbreaking :(

You have no idea how much I love Magic Carpet, particularly the sequel. I'd almost kill for a Magic Carpet 3 with online multiplayer and the real-time deformable terrain mechanic taken to new heights with current technology.

On December 20, 2006, John Romero announced a new FPS project for the Cyberathlete Professional League titled Severity for both consoles and PC.[11] Tom Mustaine (ex-Studio Director at Ritual Entertainment) will act as Director of Game Development at CPL's new studio.

It is stated that Severity will be a multiplayer first person shooter. The game will be built on technology licensed from id Software.

In September 2008 John Romero told That Gaming Site that Severity was canceled, but Tom Mustaine contacted the site to inform them the project was not canceled but in "stealth mode" citing John Romero was "let out of the loop".

Sounds like he has lost a lot of credibility.

I mean this is a perfect case of good timing; the guy was involved in a couple games that are considered ****cs, but he hasnt done anything good (quite the opposite; he has done poorly) since then.

The guy's career has been a joke since Daikatana...

I would go with StarWars Dark Forces 2, Wolfenstein, and Half-Life.

I got one. "Wheel of Time" - its based off some dudes novels. I thought it wouldn't appeal to me as your playing a lady in the game with magical spells. Turns out this game is pretty freakin' good!! Very memorable. Intuitive controls, great sound, graphics were good for its time, story was good and it was just fun to play.

Haha I remember playing the demo for that from A PC Gamer demo disc back in the 90's, pretty good I must say.

Realms of the Haunting from 1997 seems like a real good FPS Adventure game.

Can Heretic 2 be played in first-person? If so that would qualify. I played it in 3rd-person. GREAT game with a 3dfx card especially (graphics add to the Atmosphere here).

Just remembering some GLQuake and mods. I loved the Cujo mod. It was nice having a loyal mutt to do the dirty work. Then when I'm offline, there's always the Reaper bots which were surprisingly a pain to deal with.

Then there were the fan-made Quake movies. Some were quite hilarious..:D

I found this a couple of years ago on DOSgames.com. It may not be a 'classic' as such, as it was released at the same time as DOOM, and got completely owned in terms of sales. Not a bad game.
