I love FPS. I really do. And I've be playing them since wolfstein 3d. FPS is a kind of game that truly immerse yourself in a world and have a lot of fun ways to play.

I played the mindless shooters of the past and love em. I played Quake online to the death and that was great. Then I played TF (quake mod) and the coop of it made me think that it was the future. And in singleplayer area Half Life brought more designed scripted action that were really awesome. And CS brought a little more realism to the table (in the multiplayer front).

All was great and we got a lot of this kind of games for so long, with only changing the technology (something that really matters in FPS) that I was afraid to get boring.

And then came half-life 2 and bring something new. There is extreme polish in the way the story goes on and a lot of cool scripted actions but the one thing that I find out really great was how well valve guys developed some of their characters (specially alyx). I was wondering how that would develop, and how great it would be to give allies and enemies a lot more life and make it really tought and emotional decisions a long the story (since half life 2 showed up a lot of promise but there was a lot of room to improve) but that didnt happen.

FPS still limiting themselfs to be the next cutting edge graphics and gameplay wise, its in the same place for years now. I dindt like Crysis at all even with that wonderfull graphics that it sure have and even having a blast with COD4 I just can't take out of my head that I played this game for a long time now. Stalker was a great step in the right direction, it got a lot of promise, lets see what the future reserve for it. Bioshock was the next shooter that brought this to the table but it got a little repetitive by the end.

But what do you guys think? Is it great the way it is right now or we really need something new? Do you guys think that more developed characters is the next big thing or not? If not what we need in FPS?

OBS(I'm probably not being really fair about the games that bring this or that revolution to the genre. Thats because I named the games the impact me the most and not the first one that did that, and I'm probably forgoting some awesome games too so srry for that and feel free to correct me. Id like to apologize for my grammar too.)

Wall... of ... text... eyes ... hurting!

More "sandbox" FPS games with a ton of RPG elements would be my guess. Open ended gameplay is kind of the future it seems. No more of this "Level 2 - The Dam" type stuff. Instead it's a new mission and you have to go find the dam etc.

There will always be games like that because some people don't like games that are extremely open ended.

That my case, I'm very story driven in games...but there is something that crysis kind did it right. It gave really big maps that's almoslt like semi-open ended. That way you have freedom for some awesome ways to get things done but its still story driven.

I'm the same way.

Oblivion was full-on open ended, and I didn't enjoy it too much, but the Witcher was more semi-open, and I loved it.

I guess I need a sense of direction....

I think the next step is Far Cry 2.. The game not only optimizes DX10.. (Crysis barely did) but it takes into account much larger destructable worlds, Cinematic experiences, realistic AI, not to mention the weather, effects how the game is played!

That is the next step in FPS gaming!! Can't wait for it to come out!

Enemy territory Quake Wars is next step gameplay. And when mods start coming with the next patch it will get even better.

Whe someone makes a game as amazing as Crysis and COD4 mixed together with the graphics that were shown when crysis was first announced. Not the horribly downgraded ones we have now. A beautiful, open world, tactical shooter with the intensity of COD4 and a good story line.

What i would personnaly like is a little more depth in FPS games. Just add a little more customization to your armor and weapons, have an inventory and stuff. Basically, my ideal would be the gameplay of system shock 2 (aside from the gunplay) and open ended environments with multiple ways to get to your objective (think Deus Ex), the cinematic feel of half-life 2 and maybe some really well optimized engine (nothing too fancy, as long as it runs good).

You didn't mention the Battlefield franchise which is a very uniqueand fun multiplayer experience.

I do agree with you though. Not much innovation going on.The public though, got what they wanted and that is nice graphics and as a result, gameplay has been sacrificed.Anyway, ithink we'll all just have to wait for Valve to lead the way. These guys know how to create a masterpiece. :)

Crysis was not the next step. FPS would always get to the point. Crysis just made larger strides.

Portal is. It's funny, addictive, completely unique and largely non-violent.

i think a lot of the different genres will start to bleed onto each other. i think hl2 brought about an fps with hints of adventure gaming. stalker was an fps with hints of rpg gaming. it's not so much about sandbox vs. rollercoaster fps, because it seems that we've explored those two categories about as thoroughly as we're going to explore them with games like crysis and cod4. there will always be the two subgenres, and games will for the most part be categorized as one or the other, but i think the future of fps lies in games offering variety of gameplay, mainly by adding elements of other genres onto traditional fps gameplay. like hl3 (if it ever comes out) - i would be surprised if the portal gun and complex puzzle-solving elements were not to be included in the game.

Fps genre is becoming sotiresome. Guess that's why I'm loving third person shooters now due to it's refreshing and its ability to bring cinematic quality that much closer.

I find the FPS genre to be the most immersive out of all of them. No other gives you such a strong feel for your weapons and environments. I guess I have been spoilt by HL2 somewhat. When I get my computer the first three demos I'm trying are Crysis, COD4 and Bioshock. I am so excited about it.

I think it will be awsom, if they will combine rainbow six:raven shield (not vegas god forbid) and crysis, ultra realistic with open-ended huge map, but more special operations (because OFP did this, just with regular soldiers).

It will be really cool to have a four man team, dropped in the jungle, go rescue some hostages, and you do all the planning, then go and execute it perfectly.
