google "fraps" then, run it, and while its running, run the game,m and some yellow numbers should appear in 1 of the screen's corners, dont forget fraps slows down ur perfomance in min. 5 fps's, n max. 15 fps's

I downloaded it, really easy to use. I got between 20-90 on COD4, is that normal for it to jump around so much. Also UT3 was between 50-65, is that good

no way does fraps slow down performance by 10fps, maybe 1 to 5fps but not upto 15. why does fraps video recording slow down the game so much, that's what i want to know.

Those are perfect. Usually when it gets below 20 you might want to lower some settings but you seem fine where you are. A constant 30 FPS or greater will probably give you the best experience.

The encoding process is the main reason, as it takes CPU cycles to encode the video, and with the game running as well, the speed at which you can encode slows down. And the game can only run as fast as the encoder can encode the incoming stream.

The speed of your hard-drive can also sometimes be a factor.

Or at least that's my understanding of it ;).

So if you have a fast cpu it should be no problem right? Or what if you had a quad-core, and set fraps to run by itself on another core then, would there be no drop?

Fraps can't completely run on its own thread due to the way it hooks Direct3D. And even if it did, that only takes care of one problem. You still have multiple cores fighting over bandwidth to the CPU, and you may be stalling due to I/O with the hard drive.

Also keep in mind that recording a video with fraps will lock you to whatever rate the video is being recorded at or lower. So if you're recording at 30fps that's now your max. Running VSYNC on monitors that can't lock at 30Hz (most 75Hz LCD's can't) while recording video at 30 fps will then make you run at 25 fps, tops.

Thanks that clears it up. Is there a way to raise the fps you record at?
