For starters I did not use the word "free" in the topic line to get people to view my topic, it is a legitimate subject :). My girlfriend is getting a free laptop from a program in my town that helps students in need of help. She has been accepted to receive a laptop and a printer for free. The program is a well respected club found here locally where I live so it's nothing sketchy. To the point, What kind of specs should she be expecting from something like this? Thank you!

Well that's not too bad. I wouldn't imagine her using it for anything other than FB, iTunes and typing up papers lol. Thanks for the info.

Probably a Pentium M with 512mb or 1GB of RAM and Windows XP.

Companies are dumping a lot of those because most of them have the GMA900 and can't run the Aero interface in Windows 7.

It will still be decent for basic computing, but I wouldn't expect anything newer than that. No one is going to give away something with a Core 2 like the other dude suggested. Most companies are just now upgrading to Core 2s and i5s.

like eeryone else is saying, but really its hard to even say. they can give out anything they want. heck they might give out a full monster of a laptop for all they care. or give out something that very cheap just so someone has a laptop. its up in the air with what they will give out.

I would guess this giving out semi decent laptops unless you have a huge backing just costs to much

you basically claled it however their are a few things that need to be addressed as i used to build the very laptop's TC is talking about. if she stated she was in a mutimedia program you get a pretty sweet core 2 duo or pentium dual-core machine with a more modern intel gma 965 or 4500 chipset with 4gb ram and a nice sized hard drive.

the lower ends however are generally grab bags. at least where i was the math was simple single core cpu (normally pentium M's or celeron's)

2gb ram, and then the gpu was a grab bag i saw 7300gt's,x300's, gma 900's as dpeter pointed out. think i even saw an 8200M in one somewheres..

their very basic machines good for office work and itunes and under dire circumstances theyd probably be okay for the odd movie watching or video skype.
